Why was the money seized? I doubt anyone paid him $2 million to rape somebody.

Basically, if the feds see any large amounts of cash they can seize it on suspicion that the money is part of a criminal conspiracy. They can do this without making any arrests or even charging someone. They were given this power because of our nations idiotic drug war so that the DEA could just take the cash of drug kingpins. Now they can just seize anybody's wad and the person has to prove that the money wasn't bad.

But ATr's are all for it.

one would think that we can apply this to prosecute those blackwater people in iraq.

any new info on this case?

The FBI is denying reports that it took millions in cash during a search last week of a Las Vegas warehouse belonging to illusionist David Copperfield.

Just a large amount of money laying around. They seize it and as long as he can prove it's legit he'd get it back.

ok, I agree, if he committed rape he should pay, but what does $2m have to do with this? It's not like he could have profitted from the rape.

Why would he have to prove his money is legit?

most states have laws about having certain amounts of money in your possession. It can be considered a nuisance. I have an acquaintance who is a celebrity that was stopped for speeding and they found $250,000 cash on him. He was arrested and had to prove where the money came from. I don't remember the outcome of it all but it was an experience for him. I am don't remember why he said he had the money, but it wasn't very believable even to us. I will say in doing mortgages though it's not unheard of to have someone show up with their downpayment and closing costs in cash (which we cannot use). In general, it makes no sense to carry around large sums of cash. However, having pure cash at home especially with the potential for needing it is a smart move.

Same acquaintance above kept a ton of cash at his home too.

If 2 mill is a nuisance, I'll take this kind of nuisance anyday. :)

Nuisance to others. Like when someone tries to strongarm rob your ass and blasts half a neighborhood to get it.

My sister went to a party at David Copperfield's apartment in NYC once. She said the architectural design of the place was the coolest thing she's ever seen. Something about a complete circular design in all glass.

But he was really effing creepy. Kept hitting on girls in front of whoever his fiancee was back then and kept trying to use magic to pick up the 20 year old models.
