Sternberg allegedly broke into the computers of a large U.S. company that sells CD-ROMs and DVDs, but police refused to release the name of the company. The court document also did not mention the company's name.

Any guesses to which company? I can't think of anyone.

CDNow is the first one that comes to mind as CD's and DVD's are pretty much all they sell - they got purchased by Amazon now though, but just recently.

Why shouldn't they release the company name in order that if I had purchased from them I may be vigilant on my credit cards used there?

BS! :|

Well my single-use numbers are about as useful as tits on a bull; I no longer worry about buying anything online because I know that my CC is safe.

Great, the last time Amazon was hacked they got mine. Luckly no charges appeared on it, but I didn't know I was effected till the ATM at work ate my card.

Does anyone know if Discover has one time use numbers? I looked at the website and saw nothing.

This is why I hate it when companies store you CC info.

Yeah it sucks. I don't know about discover...I know that MBNA has it and it's AWESOME. I use it all the time for online and phone orders and anything like that.

Yes, they have it. I think their system is called Discover Desktop and it does provide you with one-time use numbers. I haven't tried it yet though.

I never allow my cc number to be kept by an online vendor.

But every B&R store that keeps it is acceptable? 😕

As a developer who has architected, and implemented e-commerce, backoffice, and systems integration platforms, I've seen endless holes in how B&R, and online stores, handle their credit card numbers. Most of these B&R stores integrate with a backoffice system for their AR using software that transmits the credit card information, in batch, in *plaintext*. What about places that actually print the cc information on your receipt? Do you trust these people more than you would an anyonymous online reseller?

A given store (online or B&R) is only as trustworthy as the people who work there. The only true security one could possibly hope for in commerce is to simply not participate.

You make a very good point. At the end of every day, i have a list of credit card numbers and exp dates from everyone that has used one that day on my register. Nothing is encoded whatsoever. It basically comes down to how trustworthy the employees are.

If someone wants your number, they'll get it. If your paranoid, they win. You're better off just doing business as usual and hope for the best. All major credit cards have fraud protection...
