He (apparently) just sent out some phishing emails -- poorly worded ones with spelling and grammar errors at that --and idiot people gave him the passwords to their accounts. If he did what they are saying he did, he's going to end up in jail for a long time and deservedly so... but shouldn't the idiots who hand over their credentials also be scolded for being stupid and take some of the blame?

It never ceases to amaze me how dumb people are. "well yes, of course, it's not suspicious at all to get an email from apple support using a google gmail account, let me go ahead and give them all my credentials just to be sure. While I'm at it, let me give him my social security number as well just to make double sure my information is protected!". Ugh.

Password phishing is now considered hacking in?

I thought the same thing. By the merriam-webster definition, what the guy did is clearly "hacking", it's defined as "use a computer to gain unauthorized access to data in a system".... but I think most of us think of hacking as something much more involved than that.

The media certainly made it seem like the guy actually "hacked" into something, but it was just dumb phishing if that article is accurate.

While I agree the victims are kind of idiots, if someone is an idiot and leaves their front door unlocked (or even invites you in!) it doesn't make you less responsible for stealing their TV.

Oh, I agree completely, the guy (assuming he did what they say) is guilty of the crime, and the stupidity of the victims doesn't in any way excuse his actions. Someone stealing an expensive tablet that was left in an open car in plain view is still guilty of theft, no matter how dumb the victim was for leaving the item there.

That doesn't mean we can't also acknowledge how dumb the victims in this case really seem to be.

Useful idiots, though. Look at all the material we got!

Did we?

I'd love to see Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Kirsten Dunst nude. But not like that. Whether someone willingly shares or is the victim of fraud matters to me.

Actually, can't you get screwed if you have something valuable in your car with it unlocked?

Morals o_O

Really, I can't believe that the whole Erin Andrews thing wasn't a huge wake up call to celebrities. I can't believe that many of them took that lackadaisical approach to security. Not saying it is their fault, but still they should take measures to protect themselves.

He deserves to be in jail for a long time for taking some photos? Come on.... If these were regular joes, no one would even give a shit.

Erin Andrews was filmed on a potato. I couldn't even identify her in a lineup. There were actually two more sports reporters filmed illegally by the perpetrator, including Hannah Storm btw.

But some of these leaks were filmed in full HD and are so intimate, for instance Abigail Spencer. But it ended up increasing her notoriety and career 1000 fold. So she should be thanking this phisher.

Kevin Mitnick wasn't any more of a hacker and yet no one puts his hacker labeling in quotes. He just called people up and BS'd about who he was and why he was calling to get the logins and passwords he needed. I think he might have done a little dumpster-diving too.

Depending on how he got the list of high-profile and B-list celebs, he could have done more hacking than Mitnick.

Didn't we just cover proper use of words in another thread? :)
What they both did, by definition, is "hacking".

Exactly. That's why I'm asking why hacker is in quotes and everyone questioning the validity of calling him a hacker? It's like they forgot what a hacker was. Social engineering to get unauthorized electronic access is still hacking, which is why I used a relevant example. With no word on how he got the email addresses I imagine that there was more hacking involved than that, so the people complaining now about how simple the hack was need to keep their pants on, FFS.

Good thing they spent so much time and money going after this very dangerous individual. Money well spent.

I put it in quotes because, even though by the dictionary definition what he did is obviously "hacking", generally people on a board like AT tend to think of something more when we refer to hacking......

If I stand in front of an ATM and ask people for their card and pin to "help them with a transaction", and I later use their info on my laptop to log into their account, it's technically "hacking", but I don't really think of that as hacking.
