Faxing without a fax machine?

I have an all in one inkjet with a scanner, but no fax.

I seem to remember there were some apps. out there that could fax without a fax machine? Is this the case and would I still need a modem? I have a high speed DSL line.

On a side note I have seen some all in ones with true fax, scan, copy and print, but they are inkjet. I would like a laser jet to save on speed and ink costs. Are there any all in one monochrome laser jets for under 200? I've seen laser printers with scanners, but not fax as well. Monochrome lasers are affordable now, but it seems most of the laser all in ones are color which makes the price go up rapidly. It seems the market has created an intentional gap of no monochrome laser all in ones at a decent price.

You either need a modem or something equivalent to an e-fax account.

I believe that the e-fax will allow you to e-mail a document and they will then put it across the phone line.

There may be applications that allow you to "fax" to a printer and then e-mail that "fax" copy.

Ok, looks like I will have to drag out the old modem.

So if I use a modem, what apps do you guys recommend for free faxing?

I can do this with my scanner right?

Thanks!

You already have excellent fax capability, for both sending & receiving, IF:

1) you run Windows XP, and

2) you have a dial up modem card sitting in your rig. (or just buy a cheap one & stick it in there)

I use the fax in Windows XP on (rare) occasion. It works great bot sending & receiving.

For more details read my post in this thread.

We use an old external serial modem at work for outbound faxes from the pc. Have it connected to the server and have about 20 people set to be able to fax to it. XP treats it like any other printer, pretty handy.

Excellent info there since I have DSL. All of you have been very helpful. Thanks much!

Livedistortion,

Note that the fax in Windows XP will work great over your DSL line, but won't work through your DSL modem.

You'll need to plug your DSL line into a dial-up modem in order to use the fax.

You could temporarily unplug the DSL phone line from your lan port and move to your modem vard port each time you want to fax, or leave the DSL line connectwed to the lan port, and add a branch line to the modem port.
