Funny, after readig this thread earlier today, I was asked twice (by different people/places) if I could be faxed something. Both places ended up being able to email though.

I recently had to find my own fax services, and since I only fax 6-8 times per year I wasn't interested in the many monthly subscription services available. So, I found faxzero (free to send, with limitations and ads on coverpage), then registered a free account with efax (free to receive, some nagging to upgrade, proprietary software needed to read faxes). I tested the setup and was able to send myself a fax just fine, ads are minimal (actually weren't any), and the quality was also fine.

So, if there are similar free services in UK, don't hesitate to use them (but do test them first to avoid potential embarrassment).

AFAIK, *ALL* modems have been "faxmodems" since the advent of Winmodems (ie, long before v.92).

Because of people like the people I work with. The fax machine is a lot easier to use than the scanner, which they break at least once a week.

easier?! The fax machine at my office is a monster to work with. Not to include the long ass number stings you have to input to get it to work

ie:
ext for outside commercial line + phone number +** for pause + authorization number

ends up being a 22 long number string you have to punch in to send a fax.

"PC load letter...what the fuck does that mean?!"

I must be an old fogy. I ordered my PC with a fax modem and still use the fax software. My next PC will likewise have a fax modem and I will transfer the fax software to it.

OP: Don't you miss ATZ codes?

What do you mean by that? I actually work directly on/with the fax firmware for a major printer manufacturer, and I have no idea what you're talking about.

Many faxes are received by PCs, not fax machines. The incoming faxes are saved to file instead of printed. At home, my incoming faxes get saved as tiff files and rarely do I print one.

Ahhh, OK. The vast majority of my work is spent considering only machine-to-machine faxing, since that's what we make, so that's the frame of mind I was in. We don't bother much with a PC receiving the fax.

Don't overlook that faxes tell you whether your transmission was successful. People don't generally play the "Oh, I never received that" game with faxes.
