accepted. on the other hand this poll does appear to bear out my previous understanding on the distribution of different nix desktops.
 
Maybe I'm nuts but I prefer Fluxbox.

I never could get myself situated in fluxbox. Lack of per-desktop wallpapers or thumbnail desktop pagers that I can drag windows between were show stoppers for me.
 
One thing that is fun to do is replace Metacity with Openbox.

Openbox originally was a fork of the *box stuff, I think, but the developer went with a complete rewrite.

It's ultra-configurable and is EWMH compatable so you can use it as a drop in replacement for the default window managers used in Gnome or KDE.

It's very nice. And unlike most WM it's configuration stuff is well documented and make sense.
