Read up on infantry squares.

Very hard formations for the horses to break.

If the Orcs had formed into squares instead of a long thin line the battle of Pelennor Fields may have turned out differently.

Except there were no guns in LOTR, and the Rohirrim showing up was a complete surprise.

The Romans used squares too and they didn't have guns.

Squares with pikes are nearly impossible for calvary to break.

But you are right that the Orcs most likely didn't have time form squares and they might not have even been trained on how to do so. Also the movie shows the orcs breaking ranks and running which all but gives victory to the calvary. Had they stood their ground the calvary may have been stopped when it hit their lines. The pile of dead horses and men make it impossible for the horses in the back to charge into battle.

Fire up total war and set up a battle between just pike troops and calvary and see what happens.

i love the space battles from return of the jedi, always have.

otherwise the opener to gladiator is really my favorite, followed closely by the normandy landing and the town battle in saving private ryan.

note, also, the battle in braveheart where the infantry held fast with sharp timbers against cavalry.

I haven't read up on the battle details in a while but this cavalry charge is one of the reasons the French lost the battle. As I recall Napolean had left the battlefield to rest and Ney ordered the cavalry charge without infantry support, Napolean was horrified when he found out.

What makes this movie scene so cool is that it was done without CGI. I love the overhead shots of all the infantry squares with the cavalry charging around them.

ooh ooh, and the scene in The Patriot where Mel Gibson owns all those soldiers to save his son (heath ledger). beginning of movie. awesome

I will agree that it was long, but it was still amazing. Pretty much every battle scene in that set of movies is amazing, IMO!

I agree with others who have said the opening scene in Gladiator. Very well done!
