Looking for some ideas on some new games for me and my girlfriend to play. We are periodically bouncing between Titan Quest AE and Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii. I was thinking about giving Divinity: Original Sin EA a shot since they now feature local co-op, but I'm hesitant since I've read that the co-op aspect only applies during combat and the rest of the time it will be her watching me steal from the townspeople.

We tried Helldivers but couldn't get into it for some reason. We blazed through all three Trine games and played Battleblock Theater and Castle Crashers for weeks on end. Never could get into Magicka because she doesn't have the coordination the later parts of the game requires - and she kept killing me on accident then would die a few moments later.

Any other recommendations?

Divinity: Original Sin EE has full local co-op. It was actually designed from the beginning to be played co-op. She will be able to create her own character and the Player 1 can assign one (or both) followers to her to control as well. Each player is independent allowed to go off on their own and do anything they like, if you get to far apart the game splits screen, and when you get close together the screen reforms as a single screen. If one of you starts a fight they can fight it alone (with what ever companions they have near) or the other player can teleport to them and join in the fight (Early in the game you get a magic item that lets the main characters teleport to each other at any time.) I haven't tested it, but I would imagine that both players could be in separate fights each in their own screen.

My Gf and I have been playing it couch Co-op, with Xbox 360 controllers, for a few weeks now and as long as you don't mind turn based combat, I think it is just about the perfect co-op game.

We actually started D:OS EE two days ago and I was really disappointed to see that you have to use two controllers, especially considering the horrendous control scheme for controllers. I was really hoping a keyboard/mouse and controller scheme could be worked out, but it's not in the cards without a massive workaround. It's hard for me to enjoy the game due to the really clunky controls, especially since I put in around 200 hours into the game when it was first released.

It was too fast-paced for her, but it was nice playing the game again just to have fun. Going competitive ruined the game for me unfortunately.

Overcooked.
My wife loves it, and everyone who came over to play it loves it also. It is meant for coop, two-player is fun, four-player is hilarious. If you are not sure check out the youtube 4-player gameplay videos.

Check out Octodad, you can pick it up for a few bucks on sale, and it is quite funny to play together. Although the game can rightfully be described as a frustration simulator.

The wife and I played Keep Talking and Nobody explodes the other day. She doesn't like games but enjoyed that. It's a great test of your relationship :)

I've been looking at this for us, do you need a controller for it to be fun?

Dungeon Defenders I wouldn't be able to enjoy co-op since I have about 3 pages of level 100 characters and can solo any map on any difficulty. I also still hold a #1 spot for Global Leaderboards for at least one map (last I checked it was three). I wouldn't be able to go back down to that slow pace again.

I've heard Deathspank mentioned a lot in the past as a fun co-op game, so I'll check those out. We are currently having a blast with Helldivers and we are slowly working our way up to Challenging maps. I still have no clue how we are going to be able to tackle the harder maps since the game throws so much at you right off the bat. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into Divinity: Original Sin EE for co-op. The horrendous control scheme with controllers just kill the game for me and she was really confused as to what we were supposed to be doing. When I played that game, I took my time and read every book, spoke to (and robbed) every person I met, and the pacing was fun.

Jamestown may be worth a look (top-down old school shmup).

I do wonder what the difference in Divinity controller setup on PC is versus PS4, as the PS4 controls seem fine.

I've been playing on the PC with 360 controllers and have no problems. It seems to work pretty much like every other game. The only weird thing is how you move objects around in the inventory, but there is little need to do that with the inventory filters.

The recent update adds support for using keyboard in co-op, I think it even have split kb option. The controller option also allow you to split the controls to control two players with one gamepad, but that's really hard. I have not tried playing w/ kb so I can't comment how well it works
