Awesome book, it's hard to pick a favourite... hmm 1984, Catch-22, Invisible Monsters, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas all rank up there
 
The book of the century and the book of the millenium, The Lord of the Rings of course!
(Which of course comes behind the Bible which has been the number one bestseller for thousands of years straight)

Sorry, but I have an entirely different opinion on what the book of the millenium and the whole history is, at least for me.
 
I haven't read a lot (probably around 25 or so) but ones that stand out are Timeline by Michael Crichton and War of the Rats (the movie Enemy at the Gates was based on the same story) by David L Robbins.

Right now I'm reading a small book for Sociology called Tuesdays with Morrie and it's pretty good.

I'd say..... 'A Dangerous Fortune' by Ken Follett. or 'Flow My tears the Policeman Said' by Philip K. Dick.
 
I have to say the first "serious" book I read as a kid holds that place for me. Starship Troopers, my dad got it for me on my 10th birthday.
 
The Number of the Beast, by Robert A. Heinlein.

It's not by a long shot the best book I've read, but I keep coming back to it time and time again because it's such a damned enjoyable read.

Honorable mentions:

The Long Run, by Daniel Keyes Moran (vastly underrated author whose hard-to-find Continuing Time novels are marks of writing excellence)
The War Against the Chtorr (series), by David Gerrold (outstanding and very unique premise, has excellent action and strong on themes exploring humanity's possible futures)
Darkover (series), by Marion Zimmer Bradley (great character development, and depiction of workable non-mechanical high technology)
Night's Dawn (trilogy), by Peter F. Hamilton (incredibly detailed and rich universe)
Hyperion (series), by Dan Simmons
The Dragon Never Sleeps, by Glen Cook (amazing scifi book by a largely fantasy-oriented author, this is hardcore SF at its best)
 
Desslok, same for me except I was 12 and it wasn't my birthday 🙂
(then again, my dad and myself both get more annoyed at most holidays than we like them)
