Favorite Board Game

I'm trying to debate what board game to get for x-mas for someone that just turned 30. She likes games like Clue and Monopoly from back in the day but, was wondering if there's something that's newer and fun. I was thinking of getting Candyland but, I don't remember it too much.

What was your favorite?

I always preferred word games or trivial pursuit. Scrabble, Boggle, Scattergories.

If she likes Clue and Monopoly, why not something like Game of Life or Payday?

Balderdash

I guarantee I will own you.

EDIT: the biggest problem with this game is the number of players. I'd say no more than 6 no less than 4.

Don't you live in Minnie? They have the huge Fantasy Flight Game store there.

They make some awesome games.

ps. Wild vs Canucks.......... going to be tough one......... Wild are really playing well even though they are on a 3 game losing streak. Should be a good game.

yeah I do, but never heard of that place. Not my thing at all.

Yeah the Wild have been great so far this year...hope they continue into the new year. Haven't gotten into hockey yet this year, usually doesn't take hold of me until after football is over.

Ticket to Ride & Carcassonne are fun. My wife has really gotten into Dominion too. Although that's more of a card game than "board". The Euro style strategy games are a breath of fresh air from the old stagnant Milton Bradley stuff that I grew up with.

Settlers of Catan is great.

I really like Dominion. It is more of a card game than board game, but so much fun! And it's nice that it can be 2 player.

WTF, you were going to buy Candy Land for an adult? It's a children's game. Literally no decisions to be made by the players.

If you have enough people its sometimes good to put one man in charge of the monsters, and leave the GM to be impartial.

We frequently did that in D&D and some other proper RPG's as well.

It was simply a game where unbalanced shit happened.

The party tank got the grapple skill and some other weird skill that I forget. Basically no monster could get past him and basically he was the perfect tank and any monsters from the front could not do anything at all because their attacks would be ignored by the dual shield wielding tank.

However, at the same time the Gm got some lucky as all hell hits on our squishies which took us down to an insanely low life pool. When we got to the end, we realized the boss who could not regenerate could be killed by the spirit wolf slowly which does 2 damage a turn ignoring armor, while we stayed back and watched.

So much rage on both sides.
