Favorite Android texting app?

Did a search but came up empty, so what are you all using for texting? I really dislike Verizon's (or perhaps it's Samsung's) so I've been trying Textra and Allo. Both are OK, but before I spring a whole $2-4 for my choice, I thought I get a sampling of opinions here. Only requirements are the options to change bubble colors/background, and text size/font. If it uses my contact photos, that's fine too, but not a deal killer. TIA.

I use silence since it stores texts encrypted, and texts sent to other silence users are encrypted during transit. It doesn't meet either of your two requirements though.

Interesting. Textra seems a popular choice for obvious reasons. The google default is not available on my Verizon Samsung phone. Either one or both of them decided, in their infinite wisdom, that Messenger wasn't hip enough, or something. In any case, I have no problem using (and paying for ) a good 3rd part app, so long as it fits my basic needs. So far, Textra is getting the job done, but I will check out the other candidates named here. Thanks.

Textra and Yaata are my favorite 3rd-party clients... I'm currently stuck using the stock Samsung client (which, in fairness, is pretty decent on Nougat if a little slow) in order to keep the AT&T cloud sync and advanced messaging features, but I miss the others.

Search over after what, three apps?

No mention of chompsms or mightytext, pulse sms, or evolvesms? QKSMS, even Handcent.

Shame on whoever you asked for providing such limited options.

I just use Google's Messenger.

For SMS I ended up going with Textra as well. With T-mobile I was having a problem with people getting my MMS and the only way I fixed this was a SMS app that can limit the size of your MMS. Because I found out that carriers have size limits to mms and Tmobile is less than others.
