1. FF6
2. Chrono Trigger
3. FFX
4. Sieken Densetsu 3 (even though i never finished it)
*. Fallout

As far as I know, 6 had the first sprites that were actually capable of emoting and has the best soundtrack of any game EVER.

Chrono Trigger needs no explanation.

Flame me for X, but I really enjoy tragedies (one of the reasons 6 is at the top of the list) and it has a better combat system than any of the other FF games.

SD3 was never released in the states (I played a translated ROM) but totally blows away all the other mana games.

Cant not mention the Fallout, console game or no.

Chrono Cross and Earthbound were abominations IMNSHO

Fallout 2
PlanetScape: Torment
Wasteland
Arcanum
Daggerfall
The Bard's Tale (the original series)

Opps, I do not think those have all been released for consoles.

I am not sure if any ?true? RPGs have be written or ported to a console recently, and you have to go back some 15 years or so to find reasonably decent ones for their period (although they would be consider pathetic by todays standards). The console controller interface just does not lend itself well to true RPGs like a combination keyboard/mouse or keyboard/gamepad. Add to that the fact that RPGs just do not sell well on consoles, and you will start to see why the market place is not flush with them like console FPS.

Hmm, for console, maybe try:

Baldur's Gate (I think there is a watered down version for some consoles)
Morrowind (FPS pseudo-RPG; Daggerfall sequel; most say not as good as Daggerfall)
Oblivion (FPS pseudo-RPG; Morrowind sequel; most say not as good as Morrowind)

I pity thee, SNES was the Golden Age of gaming for sure.

My Top 5 not in particular order:

FF II (IV): The adventure is only around 20hrs, but I loved the story and the characters. I loved the music in the game as well. Rydia FTW.

FF III (VI): Engrossing story, epic music, engaging characters, awesome game period.

Secret of Mana: Loved the soundtrack on this game. A different spin on RPG but loved every moment of it.

FF VII: I actually bought a Voodoo 2 card for this game for my PC. Didn't like all the machinery in the game at first but it grew on me, great story and some of the deepest characters.

Dragon Warrior I: Not a good game now but it was great back in the day.

When does Earthbound take off? A lot of people have it on their list but I always get turned off when I try to start the game and have to tell it what my favorite food is.....

It's been a long time, but I think I got hooked after leaving the first town.

I'm eagerly awaiting the fan translation of Mother 3(Earthbound 2), even though it's a couple years old now. I don't know why Nintendo never released it over here.

When does Obliviion kick in? I played it recently for XBOX and I found it pretty boring. I need a good storyline to keep me playing that or great combat which it does not have.

FF7, FF9 and the nintento 64 Zelda's were amazing. I have to say FF 10, 12, and Mass Effect were some amazing modern RPG's.

Hell Kingdom Hearts was great too. Anything Square is bound to be good.

Surely I can give it that much of a chance. I'll try to fire it up again this weekend.

FF7
FF7
FF7
FF7
FF7

I'm such a nerd for that game...I know other RPGs have deeper and more intricate storylines, yadda yadda yadda...but there is something about the atmosphere of FF7...the environments, the music....I just found it very memorable and moving.

KOTOR
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 7

And it's beyond the limit of 5 games, but I have to give Crystalis and Final Fantasy Legend a big thumbs up as well.

1) Final Fantasy 7 (PS)
2) Planescape: Torment (PC)
3) Chrono Trigger (SNES)
4) Mass Effect (360)
5) Phantasy Star 3 (Genesis)
honorable mention) Phantasy Star Online Ep 1 & 2 (Dreamcast/Gamecube)

I know I'll get a lot of crap for Phantasy Star THREE, but I played through it probably about 7 times.

Because you said any console I'm gonna ignore the ones I played on PC (basically the Elder Scrolls series).

Chrono Trigger
Vagrant Story
KOTOR
FFVII
Mario RPG

Mass Effect deserves a mention at least. And I think Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey seem likely to end up on this list in the future.

Whoa,

I never played the SNES and with all these being popular best titles, I must have really missed out. But going backward to older systems isn't easy when you are used to modern games with graphics etc.

But having cut my teeth on early computer games that had crude graphics compared to today, I can relate to the nostalgia.
