Ogre Battle: Tactics.

my flatmate was obsessed with that game.

You mean Tactics Ogre, Right?

The only Ogre Batle Games I know are Ogre Battle 64, Ogre Battle: March of the Blck Queen, and Ogre Battle gaiden . . ..

Magic Candle. Actually, MC2 was better. It was by an infrequently known video game company - mindsoft I think - they also made Siege, and some other good games.

Planescape Torment is my fav PC 2D RPG of all time. I love it to death...such wonderful characters with great personalities.

For consoles, I see no mention of the nice Lunar series for Sega CD. I enjoyed both Lunar games for the Sega CD. I also thought Grandia for the Saturn (not the ugly PSX version) was very impressive.

People are mentioning Zelda, so I'll go mention a really nice Zelda style game for the NES called Crystalis. A fine action/rpg for the NES that always had a rumored sequel for the NEOGEO. Too bad it never came out as I remember reading about the game being pretty much complete but then the big fighting game wave occured.

1) Castlevania: SOTN (not sure if this qualifies, but it's probably the best 2d game I've ever played.. I dont even like most Castlevania games!)
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Wild ARMs
