For a submarine type sandwich, My favorites come from Captain Nemo's of Chicago.
http://www.capnemos.com/index.html
The South Sea and High flier are my favorites.

South Sea:
Ham, Salami, American Cheese, Eggs, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, and Pineapple Sauce

High Flier:
Ham, Eggs, Turkey Breast, American Cheese, Pickle, Radish, Mustard Sauce, Lettuce Tomato, and Onions

I miss the location over by Wheeling! I haven't had a truly great sub since they closed shop years ago.

Otherwise, If you mean any sandwich, Gyros, Italian Beef, Philly Cheesesteak, Burgers, Chicago Dogs, Corned Beef on Rye, Brats with Sauerkraut, and Polish Sausage are all among my favorites.

Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, Bacon, American & Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado, and Mayo - On Sourdough.

Alternatively, Burger w/patty cooked to medium, bacon, mushrooms, cheese, & fried egg, with grilled-cheese sandwiches as the buns.

Grilled provolone cheese on Rye for me!

For a sandwich I make myself, and can enjoy regularly, it's the same for me, except I prefer extra sharp cheddar. For an occasional kind of treat, I think I may have to go for the Reuben. For something in between, I'd say a bacon cheeseburger.

Hot Pastrami, sometimes with Swiss, either on Rye or a nice Round Kaiser Roll.
With a good mustard and of course, a crispy pickle.

Bruchetta Panini

Sourdough bread
3 parts Brown sugar ham
1 part Provolone cheese
1 part Genoa salami

Place on hot cast iron panini press

While it's cooking, chop up tomatoes and place in bowl
sprinkle fresh oregano
add 1 part olive oil, 2 part vinegar

After the sandwich is grilled with delictable grill lines and the bread is golden brown, remove and place a layer of fresh basil and put a layer of the tomato salad
