man i love cemeteries, they're so interesting

the only thing i have done for entertainment during COVID is go exploring in cemeteries

Its this exact one ... the Long Ridge Union Cemetery

I was on the other side of some woods in the back. The oldest graves date back to the early 1700's although officially it was established in 1796. There are several really old ones that are void of any markings and are super-creepy.

Not as creepy/cool as Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich though! (RIP)

That article is from 2017.... here's hoping it got better since then!

We have shootings every other day in New Haven ... well not REALLY but sometimes it seems like it!

Violent crime has always been an issue in cities but this year its been especially bad with shootings around here, mostly gang/drug related.

Don't want to jinx myself but honestly I've personally never had a problem in my neighborhood. Everyone tells me I look like 100% definite undercover-cop material so that MAY explain things. (or I just look broke & crazy so not worth it!)

Most cops usually are well-kempt and look polished in person. Being the ugly one, yes, yes you would be a perfect undercover cop.:p
No idea, but we're basically a drug/gang hub now. We're actually considered the 3rd most dangerous city in Ontario.

https://www.mytimminsnow.com/22099/timmins-ranked-third-dangerous-city-ontario/

I'm surprised tshores is on that list, never really seen that area as being crime ridden, it's mostly farm land, figured it was quiet there.

I guess Americans are desensitized to this level of crime as it's normal in the states, but for here it's not normal at all. We used to be the stereotypical "nobody locks their doors in Canada" city. Now even if you lock your doors they'll just break in.

The laws don't help either, as if you try to defend your property or even yourself you're the one that ends up in trouble.
Well, Quebec sure produces dealers....female ones that are young and smashable (for some people). hahaha. https://torontosun.com/news/nationa...cocaine-cutie-getting-sprung-from-aussie-jail

I never pictured you as a cemetery crawler type.

i just picked it up recently!

i've enjoyed doing genealogy research for over a decade, and visiting cemeteries makes it feel more real. and kind of makes me feel more at peace, tbh.

life begins and ends for everyone, regardless of who they are, what they do, how rich/poor/good/bad they are. there's no fighting it. so just live and try to enjoy it.

plus nobody else really visits cemeteries, so i can't get COVID there.

figure if i'm not going to have kids, i at least ought to get a bunch of family pictures/stories/information for the nieces, nephews and my cousins' kids.

maybe a couple of them will be interested in it, like i was when my grandma's cousin passed down a bunch of her documents/charts/pictures to me.

i just wish i would've been interested sooner and asked more questions to my great-grandparents before they died.

Do you have a pre-existing condition or something?

If not, I mean you gotta get out more. There's a whole lot of living life going on out there.

not that i know of

i just realized a while ago that after high school/college i kind of separated from everyone

and you know what? they all seem better off without me. their lives are cool and i'd just slow them now.

so i stay out of everyone's way, let them live their best life, and do my own thing

i'll get back into regular vacations once this COVID thing is over though

cemeteries just make for a nice diversion in the meantime

I get this daily newsletter from tapinto. They might just be regional to the NE but I figured I mention them anyway.

I guess it was a week or two ago that we had one too. It was at the very edge of town though, for what that's worth.

just a reminder about how safe most of Canada really is

QbYyvMN.jpg

People always like to compare to the US when it comes to stuff like this, but that's setting the bar pretty low. :p Though I'm surprised Ontario and BC are not higher. "Per capita" is not always the best way for stuff like this though. You're probably safer anywhere in Nunavut than in my city but since there's less people in Nunavut than Ontario 1 single murder can bring the numbers up easily.

Speaking of which there was another assault not that long ago in my city. A 20 year old. They have not found the killer yet.

So those savages in Nunavut manage to find people to kill pretty frequently? Does it even have 100k in there?
just under 40,000 people
- A total of 17,999 crimes were reported to police, including 4,215 violent crimes in 2019

Like I said per capita does not paint a very accurate picture. 1 murder in Nunavut is going to drive the stat higher than 1 murder here because of the way the per capita stat works. It does not automatically make it safer here. If you walk downtown here at night you have a much higher chance of getting assaulted than in middle of Nunavut where you may not even run into a single person. It's common sense.

Per capita stats do not really paint an accurate representation of safety when comparing places of completely different populations.

Statistically you have a higher chance of getting killed by a pop machine than by a shark. It does not mean it's safer to go in waters that have sharks in them, than it is to use a pop machine.

Maps like these don't give much pragmatic help. The further one is from a the 'hood metro centers, the safer one generally is.

I mean, no one except a select few would seriously consider living in Baltimore(although there ARE rich neighborhoods there, like Bolton Hill) and the property values show it. But the rest of MD is generally safer, although the foulest of people can still rise up elsewhere.

Then there's the matter of targeted kills due to relationships gone wrong(drug deals gone bad, deadbeat males not wanting kids after hammering a female), vs the random "just felt like doing it" kill, and latter happens often in the likes of Baltimore.

You have any idea how many times I've been accused of being an undercover LEO? We'll just say quite a few.

It's fine most of the time BUT upon occasion it can be .... inconvenient shall we say?

;)
