Fatal error installing OS ... Data error (cyclic redundancy check) ... do i need a new hard drive?

Formatted then reinstalled windows XP into a laptop that has had hard drive problems in attempt to fix the problems. However i ran into a fatal error and now i can't install the OS. I ran chkdsk and it fixed the problems the computer had allegedly. I ran a hard drive utility from hitachi that rewrote all sectors to 0. I retried installing but it gave the same error.

I'm a novice at fixing computers but I'm thinking I have to replace the hard drive. Am I right? I don't want to shell out the money and find out I don't need one, that's all. thanks in advance!

Here's the message Windows XP first gives me in a popup while reinstalling
Fatal Error

An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
If you are installing from a CD, there might be a probelm with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc.
Press OK to view the Setup log file.

After I press okay it gives me the error log

Error:
SXS/DLL: Syntax error in manfiest or policy file "E:\I386\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.

and there are a couple others with the same message ... "Data error (cyclic redundancy check). do i need to replace the drive or is it something else?

Is this a copy of the original cd.

Here is a link to a thread that may help. Italso contains a link to a thread at Sharky's. Some of the links in it are broken so read the whole thread before getting sidetracked.

hrm. the thing is i tried a couple other XP cds and it had the same problem. i dont think its a problem with a bad copy of the XP cd (its a CRC error, not a manifest error) although i will try the methods they suggest for bad cd copies. thanks for the link. 🙂

A CRC error is simply telling you that the data is not getting from one place to the other. In this case the data is not getting from your cd to the hard drive.
