Fat Princess inevitably draws ire

Like I said, Inevitable.

Feminist gaming blogs across the internet have gone on the attack against cutesy PSN multiplayer game Fat Princess, which has been branded "fat-hating" and said to reinforce female stereotypes.

In case you missed it, 'Princess has two teams of 16 battle it out to rescue their princess from the opposing team's fortress, only the enemy's been stuffing her full of cake and it's now going to take most of your team to haul the tubby royal back to base. It's a clever twist on CTF, and looks bloody brilliant to be fair.

Blog Feminist Gamers doesn't agree, calling the PSN release "fat-bashing" and suggesting that it will "reinforce nasty stereotypes about women and the obese" when it's released on the PlayStation Network.

Fellow blog Shakespear Sister is even more angry. "Congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes," she posted on her blog.

"I can't figure out is why anyone would want to rescue a fat princess in the first place, since everyone knows that fat girls are unlovable human garbage at whom any sensible bloke would sooner hurl invective than cast a longing glance," she adds (with sarcasm, perhaps).

"I sure hope there's a clever dénouement like the Fat Princess magically becoming thin once she's rescued! 'Cuz that would rock, yo!"

Calm down, girls. There's far, far better games for you to focus your hate on (cough, Soul Calibur IV).

There are feminist gaming blogs? WTF? How do women find time to blog, let alone game, between all that ironing and sandwich making?

Hahaha--I love that she's offended! Think someone might be a little overweight? 🙂 I'm definitely getting this on release day now.

You should start a war between your podcast and her blog by raving about how great the game is and how those narrow-minded femi-nazis should shut up and get you a sammich while playing... 'cause rescuing fatties is tough work.

I didn't realize there were stereotypes against fat people, most people just tell it how it is....they're fat. Also, this game isn't even somewhat realistic, saying it reinforces anything in real life is retarded. This girl has some issues, the reason a lot of people don't find fat people attractive is because they usually aren't. Most men AND women (imagine that) are not attracted to fat members of the opposite sex.

I thought the SC4 comment was funny, I never liked how some Japanese developers are obsessed with huge breasts (cough like in ninja gaiden, DOA). At a certain point it just looks totally ridiculous and stupid and detracts from the game experience.

Glad to know it's not just me who wonders. Same with s/he Modeps...

Re: me being a chick - I seriously had no idea this avatar was female when I picked it. It just looks like a green-haired freak to me. I picked it because no one else uses it - I can easily pick out my posts when scrolling through a thread. Kind of freaks me out when someone else uses this avatar though, because I read "my" posts and don't remember writing them. 😛

Sandwich making? She should be cooking steaks with five-course meals!

All that energy they expended blogging about "fat-hating" could have been spent burning some real calories and getting in a shape that even they'd be proud of.

Oh by the way, I absolutely love this phrase "heteronormative assholes", it's like some sort of crazy person spin to paint someone who gets into shape as the bad guy.

Being obese (not fat, obese like those princess in-game) is not like being black, being obese is bad, it's unhealthy, obese people should not be encouraged to remain obese, they shouldn't be attacked, rather helped, but they certainly shouldn't complain when obesity is portrayed as a bad quality.

What's next, drug addicts complaining to Monolith because they are incorrectly portrayed in the game Condemned and criticizing it because it's "junkie-bashing"?

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but being obese (not a little fat, obese) is a flaw, there is nothing to argue about there, obese people should take control of their lives and regain a normal body-weight.

On the other side, I really thought we were past the feminist issues, women can do whatever they want now and they are treated differently than men (obviously duh, we ARE different) but equally in terms of social acceptance, heck sometimes women are treated better. What do women want now? Surgically remove their uterus and give them to men so WE have to give birth? Seriously this is ridiculous, women can do whatever they want, sexism is not really an issue anymore.

So I learned a new word today (heteronormative), but I don't really see what that has to do with this game. Would it have been more acceptable if the fat princesses waddled to the middle of the board and got it on?

she meant people who assume that men are men and do manly things and that women are women and can only iron, make sandwhiches, get punched in the eye, and be obese "capture the flag" flags.

Wow, having looked up heteronormative, it is totally not what I thought the word meant from her context. I thought she was mocking people who are in shape because they are bending to the pressure of society to be a specific weight as opposed to the obese people and that this game was bad because it makes this ideal weight a good thing while the obese person is shown as bad. However, now that I read about the term heteronormativity, I'm pretty sure she didn't even know what it meant when she used it.

So let's see if we've covered all the bases...

-A game is made.
-Someone (or some group) with a completely irrelevant opinion complains.
-Gaming blogs jump on it due to lack of any real industry news.
-Gaming forums everywhere explode.

Yea, looks like we've got it all covered. Kudos.
