Fat cat so fat she can't lick her own anus clean.

Anyone own a obese cat? How do you get them to lose weight? Just feed them a small amount of food per day.

Or is there a special kind of cat food that really works well for weight loss?

We had an overweight cat.

Per the vet, it comes down to regulating the food -- some cats will just eat whatever you put out for them. So we had to regulate the amount specifically for him. And change up the type of food. I think it was 1/4 cup a day? Or was it twice a day? He wasn't too happy about it to start, but eventually he lost some weight and adjusted to the regiment.

The other fix was exercise -- play with him. Make him run and jump.

If they're already super fat it's probably already too late. You can put them on a high fiber/low calorie food and measure their food, but progress there will be slow because they will scavenge for anything not nailed down or petrified, and if they're that fat they're not going to be moving or exercising much.

Oh, and if you have even one person in the house that's not completely on board with the diet, it will never work at all. My parents have a fat dog that stays fat because dad won't quit giving the fattie more than his daily allowance of food. He says "I just give him a little bit and he looks so happy." Well no shit, maybe that's why he got to be such a fatass in the first place? If given the chance that dog would probably eat an entire fifty pound bag in one sitting, only stopping to puke every so often.

ASSuming (see what I did here) its one cat this is very simply feed it less food and breakout whatever the favorite toy is for some exercise. More than one cat its a challenge unless both are fat.

Have you ever actually seen a cat lick its own anus? I haven't and we have 3 of them (cats). None of them are fat either.

My cats do.

Edit:
I sent this pic to my daughter. I dicked up the phrasing, but you can't recall emails.

Big dumb cat was 14 pounds when we got her. She weighs in around 12-12.5 now, after a steady diet (previous owner left food out, kept the bowl topped off) and a few rounds of laser pointer (previous owner didn't play with them.)

But most of that weight loss was in the first year - she'll still eat anything that isn't nailed down.

Some cats are great at eating only what they need, others gorge themselves on food until they're ready to throw up. My mom's cat is one of the former, that cat always has a bowl full of cat food that my mom periodically refills, but the cat never eats more than she needs. We on the other hand have three cats (yes, I know, that's one too many), one cat can self regulate, the second is kind of unknown, and the third one overeats like crazy, I think she just inhales the food without chewing. Since we feed them all at the same time, there is no way to portion control individual cats, so we just hold the fat one back for a couple of minutes to give the other two headstart. Since the fat one has less time to eat, that equates to smaller food portions. It took about 6 months of doing that to get measurable results, but now the fat one looks much better. She's still heavy, but a lot of it now is loose skin. It's also kind of a pain to hold her every time we feed the cats, but it's better than watch her slowly work her way to a stroke. So yes, it can be done. Portion control is the key. Start slowly reducing the portion size, and I mean slowly, and it will work itself out.

Alternate days you feed her.
One day one portion of food.
Two days of water only.

Repeat for a few weeks.

My parents had a 21 pound Angora cat. She was so fat that they had to shave her butt to keep the crap from hanging off of her fur. Gross.

I had a cat like that. All white hair.

I joked that she was a white and brown cat.

May she R.I.P. :(

I use one of these: http://www.superfeederstore.com/servlet/the-122/automatic-cat-feeder-feeders/Detail

Bit pricey, but man it has been awesome. My cat isn't obese, but he probably would be if a bowl of food was left out 24/7. He was getting fairly chubby so we got this.

Set it up to feed 4 times a day at 6 hour intervals. Also only need to fill it like once every 6 weeks with the large container. Cat gets fixed portions at set intervals. No more waking us up for food at 4am cause he ate an entire bowl in 6 hours and wants more.

My wife seems to feel bad if she doesn't always have food out for the kittahs and it's Blue Buffalo diet food.

One is still pretty trim and she still spoils em rotten with the canned food a lot, and the fat guy eats the gravy without the canned meat and the dry food.

She refuses to change, but they are still fat happy guys it appears, and most of our last 4 cats have lived to at least 17 years old over the years.

Which is pretty old for a cat, so fat and happy seems to work.
