You can still get ephedra, just not in the usual form - you have to get ephedrine HCL. I'm not fully sure of the laws regarding it; I was able to find a reputable online company (searched bizrate) to ship it here (NY), but otoh all the fat burners have stopped using it as an ingredient entirely, many online supplement stores *don't* have it, and I'm fairly sure GNC and similar stores don't carry it.
You obviously can't have a routine of taking one and then going to pig out at McDonalds, but it is a big help. The biggest part of this is its power as an appetite suppressant, and it also, being a stimulant, gives you energy - which you can use to do cardiovascular exercise. However in controlled studies people on the same diet and exercise regimen lost much more fat while on it vs. the control group. I forget the study length, but the control group lost 18 pounds average, while the ephedra group lost 20 - however, the control group lost an average of 9 pounds of fat, 9 pounds of muscle while the ephedra group lost 18 pounds of fat & 2 pounds of muscle.
FYI being at a calorie defecit (eating less than you burn, which is required to lose weight) does have the side effect of losing muscle. You can combat it by lifting, but don't expect to gain much strength while dieting.
Using it requires a brain, of course. If the directions say to take one, you take (surprise) one. 20 will not work 20 times as well. People who're already at risk should be careful, if they take it at all, since it raises blood pressure; smokers, the morbidly obese, middle-aged & older folk, those with hypertension, those with heart disease, and anything else in that area I missed. Using it if you have a heart deformity or heart arrythmia is a no-no.
