Fat and Happy: Why Most People Don't Diet..

I am fat and not happy.

I was 6'5 and 340lbs a year ago, now I am 6'6 and 280lbs. I was around 270 over the summer.

I would like to get 225ish, which is good for my height and frame. Heck, even 240 would be great.

Who the hell ever believed that America is all about weight loss? I've never heard this before. Maybe I don't hang around enough stupid people.

America has never been about dieting. America has always been about eating as much as you want whenever you want. There's nothing wrong with that, it's your body after all.

first thing i noticed in Nicaragua is that there are HARDLY any fat people at all. If they are fat, they are older men who hardly work and just drink and eat. Everyone else is slim and fit.

then on the flights home, i sat next to 2 fat americans, and in the airport i noticed how fat america is.

its pretty sad.

Mildly chubby and hating it. I was always a fit person up until my mid 20s and now I am in my late 20s and can't stand the growing bulge around my tummy.

I think the author touched on valid and excellent points in that most people are basically lazy. They want their proverbial cake and eat it too. However I wouldn't blame it as being an "American" thing but rather when you live in, arguably, the most prosperous country in the world and have extremely easy access to food it makes consumption that much easier. I think as a fundamental trait in our biology we seek out food; hell all animals do when you get down to it. As such being surrounded by food just kicks our innate and carnal food eating behaviour into overdrive.

To compare people living in a prosperous society like the USA along with folks in Nicaragua is pretty silly. Just to paint with somewhat broad strokes, I think it is safe and reasonable to assume that the incomes and access to food is much better in the US than in Nicaragua. So of course you would expect Americans to eat more compared to migrant farm workers in Nicaragua. An optimal comparison would be to some other industrialized nation such as the UK or France; both of whom are experiencing a rise in obesity related issues.

The world is catering to these fat asses so why would they feel the need to change. Local public tranpostation has raised there rates because they need to increase the number of train cars and the width of the seats to 18" Im personally sick of it. I should not have to spend more money just because people can't control how much ****** they stuff into their faces and won't exercise.

I totally agree. I commute into downtown on the bus, and it is ridiculous how many fat lardos expect more space when they sit down next to you rather than the space allocated them. They will push and shove and huff and puff just because they can't move back there seat all the way and also take up 1/3 of the other passengers seat. It is so freaking ridiculous. I am a big guy (not fat but I have a lot of muscle structure). When I sit down, I make sure to take as little room as possible to accommadate the other passenger, but when a fat-ass (I mean ass) plops down and starts to passive aggressively push and shove when there is nothing much more I can do to give them space, it pisses the heck out of me. :|

The reason they are so fat is because of this attitude. They hate being slightly uncomfortable, and would rather make everyone else uncomfortable so that they don't have to take the slightest bit of effort to make another person's day bearable. People like that in general need to be taught a lesson in manners and respecting others.

Why is this? America is often described as a nation of chronic dieters. In a Jan. 16, 2006, cover article in U.S. News & World Report, Amanda Spake suggested that Americans should 'Stop dieting. Stop obsessing about every morsel you put in your mouth, stop weighing yourself twice a day, stop letting your quest to be thin control your life." Good advice?if it were true.

The idea that Americans are obsessed with weight loss is a myth.

Judging by many of the people I see on a daily basis it sounds like they are all heeding her stupid advice.

<--Not fat and very happy. I exercise regularly and I eat pretty much what I want within reason. I'm actually losing weight since I started cycling regularly with little change to my diet.

..and there's hardly any fast food joints either. Ever since the advent of mass marketing fast food franchise/joints America has been in a bulimia rut..and it's only going to get fatter. They're well fed all the way to the graveyard.

That isn't true. Remember the fitness craze back in the early to mid 80s?

I'd expect that to come back around soon. These things are cyclical.

Don't forget Atkins (how many places jumped on the low carb bandwagon?), Jenny Craig, and all the two million commercials you see on TV regarding weight loss of some sort.

You've never been there have you ...

when I was there, I ate more than I eat here. I never eat breakfast here, and I ate it there every day, as well as just ate my ass off, and drank more soda and alcohol in 1 week than I do in a month here.

when I came home, I had LOST weight. the food there is just prepared much more properly than it is in the US. I ate a crapload of meat while there, and meat there is very VERY cheap. However its not loaded with steroids and all that other crap. Also, people there have to walk everywhere giving them a lot of exercise.

however you don't see little kids begging for mcdonalds or candy bars. over there, every meal is a good home cooked meal with meat, rice, and tortillas. it's much better for you than the crap we have over here.

true, there isn't much fast food places (like mcdonalds or whatever) over there. however they do have many MANY food places you can get food made w/in 5 minutes for you, and get carne asada and other dishes. however these foods are prepared MUCH better than they are in the US. Not to mention, a good home cooked meal over there from one of these places will cost you around $2.

all in all, it's up to the person eating the food what they put in their mouth. sure there are a lot of fast food joints here, but to use that as a cop out as to why people is fat is just ridiculous. it's one persons fault if they are fat - their own.

Ever stop to think it wasn't the food, it was the activity level? People on vaction tend to be much more active and under a lot more stress than they are at home.

And for the last time, steroids used in cows have absolutely NO effect in humans, even when injected directly into humans. Cows and humans have completely different hormone receptors. It is a physiological impossibility for bovine growth hormone to have any effect in humans.

Except for the fact that it inhibits the cow's natural growth process which in turn makes the quality of the meat (taste) and the nutrition of the meat worse. It also makes the cow's more fattened instead of lean like free range cows, which in turn we ingest.

Fat doesn't make you fat.

Also, you contradicted yourself. Higher fat meats taste BETTER than lean meats. That's why the perfect steak is marbled with fat. Too lean beef is dry and tastless. Free range meat is horrible compared to farm raised meat. It's dry and tough.

And please point to any valid proof that BGH makes the beef less nutritious.

QFT. Fat doesn't make you fat, but it is higher in easier to store as fat calories than protein unless you are an active person. I agree that being inactive is one of the reasons that Americans are so fat. We are the sitcom, internet generation. But Fast Food and fattening high-calorie diets are just as bad. Japanese people had one of the highest average age for old age death in the world till fast food started becoming popular in their country. The old traditional japanese meal is actually quite filling, yet mostly low in calories (a little fish, rice, and pickled vegetables, sometimes a stew) and very nutritious. And no one would say that Japanese people are the most athletic in the world even if Judo is a national pasttime. So what lead to the obesity there.... fast food and diet changes.

Anyone can tell you that Kobe beef, beef from the Norse areas, and certain other free range is better tasting than just straight up high fat beef. Fat is good, but it isn't the taste of the meat itself. It is only an added filler to the actual taste of the meat and shouldn't be overpowering. One of the leanest cuts of beef is tenderloin (they make filet mignon), from the cows back, and that cut of beef is highly prized as being tender (if cooked right) and highly flavorful.

I am not saying that farm raised is terrible, but free range for meat flavor alone is very good. I love a good cut of farm raised cow though. 😉

**EDIT**

Oh about the less nutritious part. There are less nutrients in meat that has a higher fat percentage. Fat has some good nutrients, but less than what the actual meat has. More burnable calories if you are active though, so it can be good for some extremely active people. That was my point.

Also the process of having a cow feed, crap, and go back into the pen can't be good for the cow's health. Leading to the nutrition idea. If you put a human into a pen, and only allow him to feed and crap, I am sure the person would not be a healthy person. Same with the cow. It can't be a healthy animal (even if it has immune boosters and such).

overweight and happy, i dont think im "fat" but whatever, my brother is also mildly fatty and perfectly happy
i straight up have no fing desire to loose weight because well i just dont fvcking care my BP is fine and my colerstol is on the low normal as well as all those other stupid things they test for

In the words of Stephen Colbert:

"60% of Americans are obese. And last I checked that was a majority. America has voted with their bellies and they have voted pro obisity."

Enjoy your heart problems America!
