I am not sure if many of you are aware of this movement. It's become very popular, especially in blogs.

This site talks about the flaws/dangers in this new movement.

This shows how some of the thinking at FA sites go.

Before I say anything, I think most FA groups are run by extremists. They're no better than any extremist from any walk of life, whether we're talking about environmentalists or the KKK. Extremism is never good and often results in idiocy (or does idiocy lead to extremism?)

That said, it's a fact that some diseases cause obesity (and no, I'm not counting overeating as one of those diseases). Also, some people are just genetically predisposed to being fat. Why shouldn't we accept these groups? Even if the entire nation had a mandatory exercise program and rationed food supplies, some people would remain fat (but obesity rates would plummet, they just could never be 0%)

Why shouldn't people be accepting of fat people? What good does bigotry do?

I think diet and exercise are great things, but with every rational call for acceptance you'll always have stupid extremists. These fat acceptance groups aren't really looking for fair treatment.

Overall, claiming that moderation and exercise are bad ultimately doesn't do any good. Calling for people to be more accepting of fat people is great. I think they're doing more good than bad, because people think of fat people kind of how they think of smokers (that they did this to themselves, but that's sometimes not the case, unlike smokers)

Fat people need to realize they are fat, and are not protected by anything. The only time I am fine with a person being fat is when they have a medical condition. Come to the fucking realization that besides your fat making you look fat in those clothes, your also fat because you fucking eat too damn much.

edit: Just to clarify if it is a medical condition that is one thing but the majority of fat asses are just fat because they cant say no to their hourly ding-dong/ho-ho/twinkie

We need a movement to accept that large numbers of people out there simply don't care about themselves? How about we just make doors narrower and shame them into taking care of themselves? Or remove the rascals from the Wal Marts?

Okay, so how do you tell the difference? If you're going to discriminate against a fat person, how do you separate the overeaters from those with a medical condition?

Also, fixed

More than I want to share but, yes I am Fat..... For Years when I was not working( my job had me working 9-20 days straight then have 3-15 days off) I sat at home and filled my time with eating more and more. I started to focus more and more on eating, when the rare times I would go out with friends we would go to a movie (lots of exercise there) and go eat a way too large meal. Because my job had a large amount of traveling alone I would go get food go back to my hotel room and eat because I was bored.

It took over 7 years for me to get this way. That being said it also took a few people to see past the fat in my new job and become friends with me, "accept" me if you will. Since then life has changed I don't set at home all the time I don't focus on eating all the time, I lost some weight and are still losing weight. I know it took me 7 years to get like this and it will take awhile for me to get back down. But now I do things that require movement, and I enjoy doing them, my new life goal is to be able to do the same things as those friends do all the time. They know that I can't do them all, I try if I fail to go ice skating for the full hour and only can do it for 20 mins, they don't care and they don't talk behind my back, they say it to my face, sometimes it is hard to hear. I would rather them be truthful.

I agree with some that these groups are extremist, but please don't shut every fat person down because of a few fat apples who want to make you accept them, sometimes you can change a life and not even know it.

first comment, 5'8", 375, and yet only eats 1800 calories a day? bullsh!t.

No sh*t, I'm 5' 8" and eat between 1500 and 1800 calories a day, and I weigh 147lbs. I also only drive my car maybe once or twice a week, and that's only to take my dog to work with me.

Everybody wants to rationalize their own lusts and disregard/circumvent the consequences. "Fat acceptance" is no different.

QFMFT.

IIRC, there was a thread with an article and it had an animated map of the US with obesity percentages dating back from the 1980s to 2007. If these FA groups are saying that the cause of the obesity surge is mostly due to genetics/medical reasons, then they are fat liars.

First hand experience can prove that most (I'd say upwards of 90%) are fat because they just eat whatever they want when they want. Go to a sit-down chain restaurant such as Friendly's or Applebees and you will see these whales gorging themselves on a 800 calorie appetizer followed with a 2000+ calorie entree + dessert.

The only reason why I did not reference to fast food is because fast-food is there as a convenience and therefore many people that are of "normal" weight eat at these venues also.

Diabetics and people with a family history of high cholesterol have overcome their hurdles through a strict diet and exercise (i.e. a LIFESTYLE change), so why can't FAT people?

I didn't say that I could tell the difference. I have plenty of friends who are fat. They say they are fat, we joke about it, but I still am friends with them. That is their personal issue, and if they want me to help (exercise partner for example) them lose weight I will be more then willing to. I will not make up excuses or buy into their bullshit excuses as to why they can't fix it (unless there really is a medical reason, which none of them have).

As anti-fat people as I am, I won't refuse to be friends or get to know somebody just because they are fat. I have plenty of friends who are "fat" by THEIR definition NOT mine (besides the women who are really thin and say that :p), but I won't give them any sympathy of "its not your fault your fat, its b/c of (insert whatever here)". The only time I will EVER feel bad for a fat person is when they really have a medical condition. I also won't out them on it, and keep it to myself if I think they are fat.

There is some conflicting information in your post. The bolded part is not fat acceptance. Basically, fat acceptance is accepting a person as fat and never challenging them on that aspect of their life. Never putting them in a situation where they might fail at a task or look down on their weight. It sounds like what you found is people who motivate you to want to change and better yourself. And I'd say that is 100 times better than a bunch of people who will never push you to change.

The rest of your post, however, is just a ton of excuses. And if you ever want to truly motivate yourself to lose weight, realize that the vast majority of fat people can shit excuses out like no tomorrow (and upon realizing this, stop doing it). It's a medical condition, I travel, I work long hours, my kids keep me busy, the gym is too far, I don't own a treadmill, weights are expensive, there isn't any health food near me, health food is expensive, my friend's don't take me anywhere, I'm always tired, my family eats this stuff, our yard is too small, fast food is convenient, excuse, excuse, excuse.

How many people are fat due to a medical condition? Probably not that many. I do understand when people live hectic lives and don't have the time to take care of their bodies but this "fat acceptance" movement is sad.

I've not followed any links, but I can't imagine that I would agree with any extremist running a "fat acceptance" movement. Yes, I'm fat. Very much so.

Perhaps some do. I'm trying to lose weight, but that's because it's easier to do so than to argue with certain other people, and because I know they'd like/accept me much more if I do lose a lot of weight. Aside from that, I really don't care that I'm fat... I very, very much prefer being heavier than what the recommended weight is for someone of a given height.
