Go buy an older 318 Dak sport and hop it up. Bone stock they were good for high 14s.

My friend had one. I had a hard time keeping up with it. 318 auto and 3.90 gears in a light weight truck makes a sweet package that will also handle better than larger trucks.

You sure about the Ram? I heard it weighs alot (which could slow it down off the line...)

Well Rob, most stock ones are doing low 15's/high 14's at the track. My friend has a Quad Cab 03 Ram with the non Hemi V8 and it's pretty peppy off the line despite the extra weight. Regular cab probably weighs about 5200lbs (just a guess). Like notfred said, a Lightning is stock considering it's a factory added supercharger. You could probably pick up a 99-00 for under $18K, and with a few mods run 12's.
Thanks for the input... I was thinking about getting a truck but my only req is that it be fast. The fastest you can buy (besides the Lightning, that's a little out of my price range!).

Since you said 1990+, why not go used? A new Hemi powered Ram will run you at least $22k+. A used L will run you under $20.

So what do you think, the Hemi or the L?!

Rob - personally I'm biased heavily towards Fords and in particular, Lightnings. If I were you I'd test drive both and see which one you like better. The Hemi will be brand new and the Lightning used for a similar price range, so there are several factors to factor into your decision. Just keep in mind that if you plan on modding your truck to go faster than it already is, the much better alternative would be the Lightning.

You are gonna most likely end up with a ragged out POS Lightning if you buy one for the $16000 a brand new Hemi Ram costs.

A Hemi-based Ram doesn't cost $16,000. What are you talking about?

For now............

You're right. The all new Lightning using the 5.4 DOHC 3valve engine producing 500hp and over 550lbs of torque is coming out. It'll also have a 6 speed manual transmission.

It's all rumors at the moment. It seems like most current L owners prefer the auto over the manual

Cause seriously...when you've got over 500/550 on tap, do you really have to worry about an auto tranny draining the power out of the drive train??? That, and it's not like L's are really used on a track or autoX where a stick is actually useful.

L's are all about leaving a streak of rubber behind you at a stoplight. You don't need a stick shift to do that with those suckers.

Read my previous post and go to Edmunds.com and check it out yourself. Configured as I said and in my zip 43202, Edmunds gives true market price under $16000 after $4500 rebate.

Dodge Ram SRT-10 will be the fastest Truck period.

Sure it will. Like all their fast trucks in the past.

Either way, it's still a Dodge..lol

Just some updated Info on both trucks

2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10 brings a massive dose of Viper power to the performance pickup segment, with a class-demolishing 500 horsepower and 525 lb.-ft. of torque. Topping 150 mph in maximum speed and reaching 60 mph in approximately five seconds, Dodge has recalibrated all expectations for truck performance.

Dodge Ram SRT-10

Edmunds Report

Puckuptruck.com link for SRT-10

Estimated 0-60 times fall between 5.0 and 5.2. The current 380hp Lightning pulls a 5.2 on the 60. The new L is estimated at a 4.5.

Also the new SRT is going to be priced around 50k. The new L around 40-45. Hell the current L is only 30k and so close in performance, with a SuperChip and some pullies to give the charger an extra psi or two, you'll beat it :)

Truck Trend - Lightning
0-60, sec 4.5 (est)

2003 SVT Lightning - Less HP but still pulling a 5.2.

The numbers basically speak for themselves. I go by Fords track record of proven fast trucks with the L series. I highly doubt they'll sit by and let the SRT beat them. Do some research and you'll see the L is already going to produce atleast 25lbs more torque and it's 500hp are underrated. They'll both be nice trucks, I just have my money on the L.

Since I just bought one I can say the Lightning is the fastest you're going to find. I got my 2000L w/16K miles for $22K. I've since put a 12" air filter on it and have a FTVB (Factory Tech Valve Body - aka shift kit) on the way.
This thing is scary fast. ;)

BTW don't go soley by the magazine #s for the Lightnings... they're faster than they're usually reviewed at. The colder the weather the faster they go. I think Ford must have got its official specs during the middle of August on a 100 degree day with 90% humidity. 14.6 1/4 mile my ass... try 13.6. ;)

You would never want a manual in that type of vehicle anyway.

My own Ram is similar except mine is 4wd and long bed, which adds about 500 lbs. It's fast for such a big vehicle, and it's got great ride and handling.

What would the 0-60 be on this? Sounds like a kickass deal man.

If you want a newer truck, the Lightning is the only way to go.

Since you said 90 and newer, if you can find a Syclone, that's faster than Lightning. ;)

That's one way to put it :)

If all you want is speed for cheap, get a S-10 and a 350. The truck would run ya 4-5k for a good one, 5-6k for a professionaly built 500 HP engine, 3k for a prepped 700r4 or 4L60E, 1k for a 12 bolt rear, 500 for a driveshaft, and $3k to put it all together.

So for 17k you could have a truck that would spank just about anything. That is if all you want is speed. It is still an S-10 tho :)

If it were me, I would buy a Dakoda and wedge a v-10 under there from a wrecked ram, add a supercharger and call it done. ;)

If I had to settle for stock, I would get an L. :(
