I tried rdesktop and it's much slower than the Windows built-in RDP client.
Even scrolling through text is laggy.

Is there one that compares?

I use xfreerdp from the command prompt, seems to work fine for what I do.

We have VisionApp here at work and use it to manage nearly 5,000 servers all over the globe. It is extremely fast and very simple for end users to use. If you're using this in an enterprise environment, then I highly recommend it :)

I tried xfreerdp so far... the text scrolling seems smooth on this one, but images still seem a lot more sluggish than the native windows rdp.

This is for desktop use so I can use my home workstation at work.

I'll look into visionapp.

The problem is how many remote desktop softwares are VNC based. It works, but its slooooow as molasses. RDP itself is about as proprietary as software can get, to the point that any real corporate implementation requires specific terminal services licensing and dedicated infrastructure. Its still by far the best remote desktop solution out there though.

If you're just looking to access your home PC at work, something like LogMeIn would probably work best since it's browser/java based to connect. Just create an account and install the client on your home PC.
