You mentioned June, did you mean June 2013? Because June 2012 has already passed?

And if you don't need a new PC until then, then wait until then to purchase. Surely price/performance will always be better in the future.

Well, he wants to sell his computer, and it has a 250W PSU. We do have an extremely old case that we might use, however, buying a PSU and a case is almost as expensive as buying a case by itself (if you're getting a no name brand PSU)

And I'm getting him a 60GB SSD, have to wait until the prices drop to $0.50/GB again though.

Step 1: Turn up at his door with an enormous fake moustache and buy his computer off him.
2: Change the case
3: "Dad, I've found this nice little PC for you, and I even know who used to own it, so I can trust where it came from!"
4: (Small) profit!

Haha our family is pretty tight, whenever the other needs money (or wants :p) we just give each other money, no questions asked, so yea, no small profit :( but will get a kudos from dad that it cost less than $200 !!!

Assuming you have zero parts on hand, here is my recommendation:

1) Tell your dad to stop being so goddamn cheap. Tell him you can't even buy a dell with $200.

2) Camp craigslist or AT For Sale section for deals. (Depending how valuable your time is, this may already be more than $200).

3) Tell him you will look into it until he tells you $300 is ok.
his dad is asian
(go cheap or go home)

(im asian, so dont take this the wrong way)

Then add $100 to his $200 and get him a nice system and everybody wins- he enjoys his computer for the coming years and you feel good knowing you did this for him..

I actually posted a few posts before this I don't need to buy windows 7 because my university gives out free copies

Let's me post on my dads situation for clarifiaction.

He doesn't game at all, except for Galaxian. This is the first time he's upgrading a computer in 6 years, and he wont be upgrading for probably another 6, so don't worry about upgrade paths.

I know the mentality here, which is the same as mine, bump up the price a tad and get vastly better specs, which is what i did for my video card, got a 7850, but since my dad wont be doing anything stressful on his computer, even if of saves $30 and the computer u get is vastly crappier, do it. They philosophy is, get the price as low as possible at all costs. But again there's a limit to that, which is anything C2D first gen or lower don't, because its not worth it.

Get the best refurb computer in terms of hardware you can find and then put on your free copy windows 7 if it comes with something older installed.
