Fastest Memory

Just got through a long article on FAST 2GB DDR kits http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?sitesize=yes&i=2676 and i see the OCZ 3200 512 sticks still out-perform the competetion. That is the memory i want to buy but i am not sure EXACTLY what i am looking for. There are alot of variatoins on the OCZ page that confuse me. This, if i do, will be the first time i purchase DDR. I've been using RDRAM on my 478 Northwood 400fsb for the last 4yrs now with my 3.06 oc'd to 3.5 and its about at the end of the line when it comes to playing DODS from HL2. Yes, i have been ignoring the DDR scene and I think maybe its a good idea to get my AMD system going. I am not sold on the DDR2 mem hearing it doesn't perform as fast as the DDR does (knock on wood) I wanna knock on wood, can i do that? thanks. So, EXACTLY which memory are they talking about on the charts at the very last page of the article thats in gold?

Thanks DDR fans,

2x1GB G.Skill Extreme DDR500 $197. Can't beat amazing samsung UCCC's for $197. If you want to overclock this will give you a nice headstart. On one of my other systems here I'm running OCZ Platinum memory at 2-3-2-5@1T memtest 86 rock stable. Great for a stock system, where you want it to be fast but you don't want to be tech support- like for a girlfriends system in my case. Hahah.

🙂

EDIT: BTW, the ones in the article are revision two- the ones i'm using are revision one because it is the only flavor of OCZ Platinum newegg offers in the 2x1GB variety. The platinum 2 is a great 1GB set, but if you want to switch to 2GB you'll take a performance hit going from 1T->2T when adding two more sticks.

Are you sure that just upgrading the video card wouldn't provide the speed you're looking for?
An AGP Radeon 850XT can be found for ~$200, after $50 MIR.

Yes, RDram was great when it was on the only dual channel memory configuration with Intel back in the day, but once dual channel was available for DDR ram, it pretty much is a dinasour now.

I've used 3 sets of 2Gig kits and here is how I rate them from my personal view and performance judgement.

I would have rated the Crucials as top, but again with the issues they are having, it is hit and miss with this set.

1) Mushkin XP4000
2) Crucial Ballistix (if you can find them - BTW I do have a set brand new sealed back from RMA for sale😉)
3) OCZ 3200 Platiunums

-Edit typo.

i tried an 850XT PE and it didn't do the trick for DODS, and i tried it going from a 9800Pro. Returned it.

Researching DDR memory is THEE toughest thing ive had to do since i began researching parts 6yrs ago. I'm still lost on which to buy...
