Fastest cpu for S@H?

Xeons (512 KB+) are very good per MHz, but not very economical. 🙂 I'd say a Duron is probably the best in terms of price and output.

But, the Duron's meet that criteria for just about anything.

It would be a shorter list for

"Those applications where a Duron is NOT the most cost effective processor"

I would say

Tbird 1GHz AXIA @ 1.4GHz+ will give best bang for bucks.

Tbirds has the about same "Clocks per Flops" as Coppermines. Durons a bit lower.

if you could find a 1 GHz alpha that would rule. right now the fastest thing at TLC's bench page is a 1.8GHz p4, followed by a 1.4GHz athlon, on the either side of 4 hours.

Doh!!! That makes my P3@1050Mhz feel SLOW!!! Must... upgrade.... soon....

Although Dual Palominos at 1.6Ghz+ sounds mighty enticing...... 😀

For my money it's better to keep the old cpu's crunching while putting together another machine
for speed. Right now I have two BX systems that put out about 5 WU per day between them and
an old K62-450@500 that puts out one WU/day. That's six units a day *I* (the team / seti@home) wouldn't be getting otherwise. It also gives me the ability to distribute some files and processes out to other machines on my lan so they don't all sit and run on my main box. This also gives me a few machines for the rest of the family to share the cable internet and play their games / do their homework etc...

Just keep in mind while you do all this upgrading that those "old" procs and mobos can be useful, it's easy to find cheap ATX boxes, NIC's, Vid cards etc... in the For Sale forum here on AnandTech.
Sometimes Team members even offer them here for free!

If nothing else, offer your old stuff to us first - Team members know what to do with that stuff to keep it crackin' for TA!

I just bid a job where if I get it I will be installing two of These each with 4 1ghz PIII XEON
procs and 1GB ECC Ram. Of course I will have to see how many WU/hour they will be able to do...

Why not just leave SETI permanently installed on them?

heheh... I just might... call it a "keep alive" program or something. 😀
IF I get the job, I have made it part of my spec that I (and my employees) will be the only one with log on priveledges - I guess they could sniff the traffic and see them going to seti to exchange units a couple times an hour but I doubt they would. I'll have to try of course
( /crossing fingers and toes hoping to get the gig)
