Fastest Capture Codec

I am trying to capture some streaming video (DVR software) via some screen capture software (screen virtuoso). I can get about 25 - 27 (so close yet so far away) fps the goal is to get 30fps (29.97 to be exact).

I have a 3.4GHz P4 (oc to 3.96Ghz) with 3GB PC2 6400 (4-4-4-12) with 2 3.0Gbs SATA drives one for the buffer from the DVR software (I think this one is on the system drive but on a different partition) the other for the Capture sofware output.

I seem to get the closest to 30 fps with the DIVX codec all other codecs I get between 15-20fps.

Are there any codecs out there that would give me the boost I need? What else could I do to get this to capture at NTSC? I am willing to shell out a bit of cash to make this happen.

Thanks, JOe K.

You should be capturing to whatever raw format your camera outputs and then compressing the whole video after you're done.

I was having performance issues until I turned on hardware acceleration. Then I had free reign as far as the capture limit of fps. The problem was then it would only capture the video overlay (a blank screen with the water mark). So I turned off hardware acceleration (consequently having performance issues) I recorded a bit but then I turned it back on. It recorded fine after that (with all the performance benefits)!

So the procedure for me to record at 30fps with pretty much any codec is to:

1 Start your program and the DVR software
2 Turn off hardware acceleration
3 do a small recording with acceleration off
4 turn on hardware acceleration
5 then I can record at full performance

Any idea why this is the case?

Also, I'm thinking about updating the processor and motherboard on the capture machine. As it stands it has a P4 3.4Ghz oc'ed to 4.1Ghz, and 3GB of PC2 6400 with no PageFile, with two SATA drives, and GEforce7300 512MB (GDDR2 I think).

Do you think there would be a performance increase if I move to a Core 2 with less Processor speed on each core but more cores?

Then maybe I could leave hardware acceleration off?

Thanks, JOe K.
