I want to do a cheap upgrade to my daughter's computer, which uses Crucial DDR 2100 memory and an ECS K7S5A pro motherboard. What is the fastest cpu I can substitute in before I must go to faster memory? No overclocking for this one please-I want something as cool and stable as possible.

no athlon xp requires memory faster than pc 2100 - any athlon xp would work with it

oops read it the wrong way ..

he means you can run all athlons off pc2100 .. some will be slower because the newer athlons need faster ram to work as they are intended.

i think the highest you can get is the ATHLON 2400+, if you want to keep within the 266 FSB== i don't knwo much about that mobo but you can ask around.

I used a 2500@3200 setup with 2100 RAM. Just used a 3:2 divider and I had my 3200+ :)

While any barton processor will work on that mobo, it does not support the 166/333 fsb, so you will not get full value from your chip. The best current chip is the 2400+ as suggested above.
