Faster socket 775?

I built a computer in 07 and my specs are:
Abit IP 35 pro mobo
4x1 GB patriot 1600 memory
Ati 2900xt graphics
Antec 650 watt power supply

I have been on and off this forum for years and have a decent handle on overclocking + performance parts.
I have a Q6600 that is stable at 3.06 Ghz with very little overvoltage but my mobo won't give me much more (without cranking up the MCH)
Is there a quad core socket 775 processor that would give me a much of a speed boost?

I know my graphics card needs upgrading and I'm not sold on my mobo (keeps giving me a bios checksum error, not the battery) Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
 
If you're having issues with the mobo, maybe it's time to just move onto a new platform rather than sticking with LGA775.
 
If you're looking for games to play better, spend money on the GPU. The Q6600 is still a good proc, but the 2900XT was crap since day 1


Though if it's within your means, a total upgrade would be good. Otherwise, just get a new GPU and wait for sandy bridge/bulldozer
 
Any upgrade including both a new motherboard and CPU should move to a newer platform, whether i5, i7 or X2/X3/X4. I'm trying to salvage every bit of my 775 system as well, but it's getting to about that point.

edit: sorry, specifically Phenom II X-variants.

Your Q6600 would bring a decent price on fleabay, recouping a lot of your costs towards a new setup, ditto the board (you can sell it, just be blatantly honest about that weird message, people still buy iffy stuff), and the video card.

Your ram and PSU are good, if you find a DDR2 AM2+/AM3 board and a PhII. If you're a gamer, then an overclocked PhII X4 Black Edition setup would be awesome for you.

If you dump your memory, then maybe you can do the full monty and get an i7 920.

Either way though, don't spend so much on your mobo/cpu/ram that you skimp on the video card (if you're a gamer). If you don't game, then hell keep the 2900.
