Faster Processor or Hard Drive?

Which would you take?

1.4ghz Pentium M
60gb 7200rpm HD

or

1.6ghz Pentium M
40gb 5400rpm HD
 
Faster hard drive. I don't think you will notice much difference from 200 mhz. Going from 5400 to 7200, I think you would notice great deal in speed.
 
There is roughly a $100 difference between combo 1 and combo 2 up top... The 1.4ghz w/60gb 7200rpm being the more expensive.

The only thing that concerns me is that the wait on that one is 2-4 weeks as opposed to 2 weeks on the latter. I start school in 4 weeks 😀
 
Go with the Faster Hdd as it will help you more than the Faster Processor. some companys can hurry ur order for a bit more you may want to look in to that. also you may want to consider upping the memory when you get it.

Keep in mind it will be hard to upgrade the processor in the future, but HDD upgrades are easy. Of course if you think you will need those extra 20GB then the choice is easy.

Thats part of the reason for the hesitation, i can pretty easily say i wont ever need that extra 20gb. My laptop is going to be purely for law school. All my storage will be done on my desktop. I would almost rather put that extra $100 into on-site service.....
 
Lol you seem to be decided on what you want already. Why ask if you're so hesitant about the HD? Well in either case, if you're just gonna use your laptop for law school, I'm assuming you'll mostly (or completely) be using it for Office and other productivity (read non-gaming) programs. In that case, screw the HD. All the HD will really improve is the loading time of windows all your programs. Last I saw, Word doesn't take too long to load....regardless of 5400rpm or 7200rpm HD's. I'm also pretty sure you really don't need the 1.6 ghz cpu upgrade. But if you're hellbent on upgrading, then go with the cheaper upgrade since you say you won't be needing the extra space. Now if you intend to do some GAMING or gonna be downloading some files (errr....legal of course 😉 ) that's a different story. In that case, i'd recommend the HD.

If you dont have use for the extra 20 gbs... cant u get a 7200 rpm 40 gb hdd? That ll brirng down the price.. right?
 
Have you looked at buying a new 60gb 7200rpm lappy drive? They run about 200+ from what i have found. Look at that as an envestment.
 
go with the faster cpu. if you want a faster hard drive you can upgrade later, or better yet, just get an external firewire drive.
 
I would get the faster HD. You'll notice a much bigger performance "feel" with the HD.
And that's really all that matters; benchmarks mean nothing if the owner doesnt notice it.
 
What was the point of telling him to get a firewire drive? That has nothing to do with how fast the OS or apps load get the 7200....

Go with the faster harddrive...if you are starved for storage you can always upgrade in a few years or get an external solution. The fast hard drive will make it boot faster, open programs faster, and often times are better quality drives to boot! BTW. you won't notice the 200mhz difference much anyway with mostly business type applications...
