Faster CELERON D, or slower Pentium 4? Which one for my build?

I am currently trying to build a BUDGET computer. I might want to overclock some later... But, I can get a FASTER CELERON D, or a SLOWER P4 for the same price or maybe even cheaper for the celeron? What does everybody think about the celerons and which one would be a better processor to put into a computer

Pentium 4 will have a faster FSB and more L2 cache. If your not ocing then P4 is what you want .Also if your mobo supports dual cores I would also recommend the cheap P-D 805 or 920. Both under $250.

The Pentium 4 is likely to be the better choice overall, however the Celeron might be better in a limited number of applications.

However it will really depend on the clockspeed of each.

depending on how significantly more expensive it is to go intel though, that may be his better option simply because of the Pentium D 805. Dual Core for under $150 is kind of hard to pass up

Grab the pentium D 805 with the new stepping(B0 i think) and you wont be sorry. Check out www.Tomshardware.com for the info. They got theirs to 4.1Ghz store bought. Im not saying that you will get that high. But the chances are very high that you will get a great overclock. Again like said above 130 bucks for a cpu that can possibly out perform a 1000 dollar cpu is hard to pass up.

yeah i read that story from slash dot.
apparently they used exotic (water) cooling for that speed. besides most ppl don't OC cuz they don't have enough money to replace OC damage (i know that why i don't).

anyway yeah pd805 is a great bargain too.

I'm looking to make a secondary computer for my self for a different location, and I too have been contemplating the same question.

The only significant differences between the celeron and the Pentium 4 are:

P4 has 533MHz/800Mhz FSB/200Mhz host clock
Celeron has 533Mhz/133Mhz host clock

P4 has HyperThreading
Celeron does not

P4 has 1MB/2MB of L2 cache
Celeron has 256KB of L2 cache

The cheapest pentium 4 to even have the 800MHz FSB and 2M cache is the 630 (3.0) for $165.99

Unless you are getting this CPU or BETTER, my vote goes to the celeron. If you are looking to buy a P4 with 1M of cache and the 533FSB then you need to go buy a 3.2 or a 3.33 celeron and pocket the difference.

Summation
spending less than 165 on a CPU? GET A MAXED OUT CELERON
spending more than 165 on a CPU? get the best P4 you are willing to buy- and make sure it is a 2M cache/800FSB one.

**Important note**
Intel 975 and 955 chipsets are NOT compatable with 533Mhz FSB CPUs so make sure you are getting a 945 platform for these CPUs......or a 915 if you like old tech that costs as much as new tech. And FTLOG, do not buy a 925X based motherboard anymore.
