Hello everyone!

Fast question regarding WINS registration on an NT 4 Server sp6. If I have a machine that I connect to a new network, and run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew, will that machine register itself with WINS? Or must I restart the machine for this to occur?

I would appreciate specific examples, or text to support this, if you could. Thank you very much for your help!

Renewing the IP lease will reregister with WINS, and releasing the IP address will unregister with WINS.

Q170062 even says so.

To finish connecting the dots, the computer must be configured to use WINS meaning that it has to be set up on the DHCP server side for this to work. I am pretty sure we all made that connection but I wanted to add this in anyway.

Looks like you guys up there got it figured out. But just in case:

nbtstat -RR (case sensitive) will do a re-register to the wins server. This command is to wins as ipconfig /renew is to dhcp.

:D

Wow. I really have to let you all know how impressed, and thankful I am. I had no idea that I would not only get an answer 1) so fast, but for it to be 2) actually correct, and 3) have documentation to back it up.

Sorry to sound corny, but you guys are real gems. Thank you so much, once again.
