I'm watching the Women's College World Series on ESPN.

Wondering..

is underhand pitching of a softball more effecient than overhand ?

The pitches seem pretty fast for a softball.. mid 60's MPH

but are there any variations of pitches you can throw like that?

I guess a curve ball would be impossible, but changeups would work.

Most seem to be straight down the middle at consistant speed.

Actually they can throw balls that rise and their curveball is more like a slider.

They are fast... certainly not as fast as overhand though. Softballs are also larger, so you can't throw them overhand as easily.
