Fast Notebooks w/ no optical drive

Ok, I have not kept up with tech stuff for about 5-10 years, so here is a two part question:

1) I am looking for a notebook with something along the lines of these specs

*Must have no optical drive
*Screen between 11-14 inches
*resolution at least 1366 wide but 1600 preferable
*Decent sized HD, you know at least 250gb or something, so no flash one.
*low-mid level dedicated graphics card preferred but not mandaatory
*not an atom processor. something faster.
*cheap, you know like $600 or something.

Almost everything comes with optical drives still. Exceptions I can find:

*Dell Studio 14z which they don't seem to be making anymore but they are sold in outlet store? About $500-$600

*I see an Acer netbook on newegg with an i3 processor... but its also $600 and no graphics card.

Anything else out there?

Second question are there any platforms coming out in the next six months or so that will suit my needs?

Just curious as to why you're trying to avoid the optical drive...

At this juncture its still such a commonly desired feature that its going to be cheaper to include it than leave it out, I think we're still a "tock" generation or two away before we start to see optical drives commonly left out.

Dont make a big deal out of this. Identify your used notebook at http://www.sdiego.com/laptops.htm and just have them configure it the way you want as they do refurbishing (ie, remove the CD/DvD drive and install a trim plate & add a larger HDD).

Ive seen some nice ones there with graphics cards and SXGA resolution in a 14 screen.

should be able to get i3 stuff or mobile amd processors. acer timeline/timeline x models, asus u models, thats all intel stuff with meh intel graphics but decent cpu and good battery life. check anandtech mobile reviews for a relatively recent sub'14" sections

getting an amd-based model will have shorter battery life but generally better graphics. toshiba t235d is an option: $600, no optical, decent battery and performance, 13.3", amd graphics

1366x768 seems to be the standard now, some models you can customize from places and get a nicer panel but ill cost you.

i just got a timeline x 1810t for $600 at amazon
