Fast food CEO: Minimum wage hikes closing locations

CKE Restaurants' roots began in California roughly seven decades ago, but you won't see the parent company of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's expanding there much anymore.

In part it's because "the minimum wage is so high so it's harder to come up with profitable business models," Puzder said in an interview. The state's minimum wage is set to rise to $9 in July, making it among the nation's highest, and $10 by January 2016.

In cities in other states where the minimum wage has gone up considerably, Puzder said "franchisees are closing locations" after riding out lease expirations.

Excellent news. These bastards should close.

I've always said a Company has no business being in business if it can't pay employees properly.

It's excellent news that minimum wage hikes are forcing businesses to close? Yet you will continue to eat at fast food joints and not tip the workers and continue to buy imported crap and cry when jobs leave the country.

Not buying it.

Mc D's and other fast food is not growing revenue not because of min wage, but because folks are eating less #1's and generally "Not Loving It!" as much as the stupid new ad campaign would have us believe.

Not me, i'm still slamming #1's, might have one today, can't wait!

Gotta watch out for these asshole exces who will conflate/lie/decieve to make/take more money. The recent spin from fast food industry regarding minimum wage looks to me to be complete BS/deception along the lines of what we're accustomed to from our federal government when they don't like the truth.

After this, probably at this time as well, we'll see fast food push for higher food stamp allotments to folks while insisting that food stamps be accepted at fast food locations nation wide because they provide essential/healthy food for the needy. Is the win win for these sociopaths to raise min wage in exchange for legality of accepting food stamps at fast food nation wide?

Um, he/she replied to himself/herself. That second post is sarcasm.

Oh if only it were. You don't know McOwned very well. He only repeatedly calls out for the hostile takeover of assets from the rich and then kicking them out of the country.

Do many people just not understand how independently owned franchises work?

And on another note, why do the activists hold up fast food joints as the pillar of low-class employment? As if it is there duty to provide jobs and not the duty of anyone else?

why do peole make the equivelent of 25 us dollars an hour at mcdonalds in Denmark?.....and have a mcdonalds employees union?.... yet you dont hear mcdonalds complaining about that....

only in the USA....because they understand America is controlled my elitist psychopaths, and they can get away with it....because they have an entire political party who ignorantly prop up these elitist psychopaths.......

so i say let them close, let these "job creator" franchise owners go belly up.... serves them right., should have treated your employees better instead of telling them "touqh shit, get on welfare!"

the ignorant right, really....like reall doesn't understand why thats a step in the wrong direction for our country.

raise the minimum wage, offer your employees healthcare.

what we have is the alternative. how's that working out for you

Profit margins for restaurants and especially fast food are razor thin.

They're closing because they are no longer profitable. I fail to see how that is a good thing.

Someone is paying for all that, and it's the consumer:

http://nomadcapitalist.com/2013/11/24/top-5-expensive-countries-on-the-big-mac-index/

The Big Mac Index places socialist Denmark as the fourth most expensive hamburger in the world – almost a full $1 more expensive than the same sandwich in The Land of the Free. While Denmark has been ranked one of the most economically free European countries, it also imposes stringent regulations on businesses. Taxes don’t help, either; Denmark has raised its value added tax (VAT) from the low single digits a few decades ago, to its current 25% level. Income taxes are as high as 59%. And if you eat too many Big Macs, you might get hit by Denmark’s “fat tax”.

Dump 20+ part timers and 3-4 full time people off the employment rolls must be a positive step in your mind.

But you know what the beauty of the U.S. is? You are able to go to California and start your own business. If you employee people at the price you want to pay them & they are willing to work for, and produce food people enjoy eating for a price they are willing to pay, then you will have started up a successful business and you have now joined the ranks of the "job creators".

OMG! Stop with the stupidity. There can only be ONE FORUM CLOWN in this thread and that title has been rightfully earned by the OP.

Furthermore earning the equivalent of 25 dollars an hour in Denmark is not the same as earning 25 an hour in the US. You have zero understanding of the cost of living, let alone the differences in currency exchange rates.

so lets see if I get this correct.....

Pay unskilled laborers a living wage...so far so good?
No incentive to get some skills or education...so far so good?
So gradually we are changing the rules of life where once upon a time you knew you needed to have a real skill or an education to get a real job.......

They are going to price themselves out of a job both short and long term. Short term employers are going to hire less, layoff more, demand more out of the employees they keep, or in the case above just shut down all together. Long term replacements will inevitably be developed via more automation. There will be one or two skilled workers to keep everything running, but your Big Mac will be cooked by machine rather than human.

The other option would be for us as a society to simply pay more. No more dollar menus. But why even go to the places if they are no longer cheap?

If the profits were "razor thin" to begin with all the more reason the business should be shut down.

So fatties have to drive an extra mile for their big mac. Big deal.

Min wage in this country is absurd, and those franchises that are closing were only making a profit by underpaying labor.
