Fast booting PC motherboards?

Hello,

I know for a couple of years they've had motherboards on laptops that have been optimized to boot faster but don't know much about PC motherboards being designed for this. Intel just had a show and was curious if this was discussed? I know Windows 8 is designed to boot faster but I'll probably have Windows 7 for a while based on what I've seen of Win8. I have a laptop that can completely boot in 20 seconds but my PC with the same apps takes about 90 seconds. Both have SSD drives.
 
Are you talking about how long it takes to get to the Windows splash screen or how long it takes to get from power-on to desktop ?

The motherboard has little to do with how fast the OS boots. ABout the only way you can get to the Windows start screen faster, is by disabling features on the mobo..

The laptop may boot faster because it has less features like multiple HDD controllers..
 
I'm talking about how long it takes for you to turn on a computer that is powered down till the time it gets past the log in screen and all items are loaded that are part of the reg run and startup group.

I should be clear the motherboard has to do with how long a computer takes to go from a powered off state to loading the OS.

You should look up things like the phoenix bios to see an example of what I'm talking about. http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=phoenix+bios+fast+boot+youtube You can find examples of press releases on Intel working with MS on this including loading part of the OS in the chipset. However I was hoping beside the phoenix bios for laptops there might be some of this for PCs.

It is partially - however it is also based on your motherboard. If you said to anyone I'll let you know as soon as my computer is finished booting - Anyone you are speaking to would realize your computer has to go through post to get to the OS being loaded. They wouldn't assume your motherboard had already gotten though checking your memory and controllers and was just waiting for you to say - yes, you can load my OS now.
 
The faster POST has to do with disabling or streamlining testing and checks.
Most Motherboards have some kind of fast boot options.

Anyone you are speaking to would realize your computer has to go through post to get to the OS being loaded.
Actually, most people outside of environments like this forum,wouldn't have a clue..
 
Cheap motherboards with few features seem to get to the booting Windows stage the quickest. I've seen some so fast that I sometimes have to reboot a few times to even get into BIOS - they will flash by so fast. However, enthusiasts are allergic to cheap motherboards, so you likely won't want to own one.
 
Like Zap said the fewer the features and also the less you use of those features the faster the boot form the bios will be. I had a EVGA Classfied MB that was a awsome for O.C. but it had a lot of features and the boot time was more than any other MB I had had.
I had two OZ 64g solid statedrives in raid 0. Once I got past the bios boot up, it went to windows vista very fast.
 
In fact there have been threads on what has been the best improvment for them in there PC's, top things I belive were solid state drive's, monitors and getting cable conection over 36k.
I look forward to when they can make the bios boot real fast. If you need to get into the Bios you would have to hold down the del key as you turned it on, if not you would go right to windows.
 
I'd have to say you would want an Intel Z68 or P67 or AMD 990 based motherboard which has the new UEFI BIOS which removes any legacy 16-bit real mode BIOS code which may have been necessary for older OSes. Both MacOSX and Windows Vista?, 7 and 8 have support for this new standard.

Thanks! I think EUFI is one of the terms I heard before but would never have remembered it if you hadn't mentioned it.

I had an Asrock board that would POST very swiftly, until they released an update that actually slowed it down. Apparently some people had complained it was too hard to enter the BIOS.
 
UEFI vers 2.3.1 has protocols just for Win 8
Win 8 will be in hibernate mode even during PC "off" stste
10 second boot first, then as they perfect it 5-7 second.
There is a big argument on another forum as to whether you will actually even be able to INSTALL Win 8 to a non UEFI bios mobo, or even the current hybrid UEFI bios (MSDOS MBR - EFI GPT)
Its also up in the air if a bios upgrade will make 2.3.1 avail for current 2.0 UEFI mobo
