Fast 19" 8 bit LCD - is there such a thing?

HA!!! Well, that didn't last long. $500 was just too much to bear. I cancelled the VP192b and ordered the new VP171b-2 from Newegg for $350. Sounds good for 8ms even though maybe not 8 bit. Strange Viewsonic site claims 16.7m colors supported.

I'm on info overload. Hope this was the right choice.
 
Hey everyone. I have done a lot of reading, a lot of comparisons, a lot of price-watching, and now that all my new rig components have arrived, I decided that I had to reach a conclusion on the new LCD. Of course I also spent the last 1.5 months deeply researching all my purchase options for the computer parts, and I think I made the best possible choices for my needs / price range.

As far as my LCD, I couldn't resist the $475.80 (includes $25.80 shipping and then $100 rebate) price tag for the Samsung 193p from J&R ( http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3967280 ). Note that the price is now $50 higher, as of the morning of 1/21/05 (you can still get the $100 rebate though). Refer to my story in the following thread for a GREAT customer service success with this J&R company (the main point is that the price was $50 cheaper last night, but suddenly their website went down for maintenance, and I couldn't place my order; when I woke up this morning and went back, I was upset at the higher price, so I called, and they gladly gave me last night's price): http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=1497560&enterthread=y

I was almost set on getting the Samsung 910T 19" LCD, but that has 25 ms response time, and not as nice of ergonomic adjustments as the 193p. And I was looking at paying about $400-$415 for the 910T, so when I saw that I could get the 193p for only $475.80, I just had to jump on it. Consider that the next-lowest price appears to be a whopping $669.99 (and then add $12 shipping) from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=24-001-156&depa=1 . What a price difference. And yesterday Newegg actually was $20 higher (they lowered it today).


I was also considering the Viewsonic VP912B, especially for its 12ms response time, BUT although I love gaming, my primary use will be text-based apps, and I just couldn't justify paying $100 more for the Viewsonic versus the Samsung 193p. (I'm already stretching my budget...)

So you went for new 17" Viewsonic. Can't blame you. If 500$ is too much then it is too much. And maybe this new Viewsonic really does 16.7 M colors. I'm guessing it does it by dithering, but that's just a guess.. and not a problem for you, I think. And if you're happy with 17" then why, like you say, pay premium for 19". I had 19" before so I didn't want to go for smaller, but that's just me.

Interesting that new VP912B is said to be without H2 Glare. It makes sense. The response for that reflective surface was not all the way positive, so I understand them dropping it.

If I could have had Samsung 193P at the price you did, I would have jumped for it too. It is a very good PVA panel. I have done my months of research and price watching too. Damnation, I wish we had your prices here in Finland. If anyone is paying premium for these products, it is us. I'll quote some lowest prices:
Samsung 193P ---- 652EUR / 854$
Viewsonic VP912 ---- 559EUR / 732$
Viewsonic VP17B ---- 359EUR / 470$
LaCie photon19vision ----566EUR / 741$

One would think dollar doing worse than euro would help lower the prices, but I don't see it. Blah, blah, don't mind me. This is not your problem.. lucky you 😉

I read that the "VX" line is Viewsonic's standard consumer unit, lowest quality. The "VP" I think stands for "professional", while "VG" stands for "graphics". The latter 2 are supposed to be higher quality. The VX models are clearly the cheapest.

I was considering the VX910 for myself for the past couple weeks, because it keeps showing up in CompUSA, Best Buy, etc. ads for real cheap ($349 to $399). But I looked at it in Best Buy and thought it looked kinda dark. Of course who knows in store (what settings it's on, how the light is, etc). But then I ran into this Samsung 193p the other day and had to splurge. Heck, $475.80 was a STEAL! You may also look at the Samsung 910T. That is a cheaper one... around $400, and looks better than the VX910 to me (not sure about the VX912).

 
How is the LaCie? The only thing holding me back from the Iiyama after reading your toils and searches is a review stating doing things like playing UT2004 will be okay! Nice website sleepy. Thanks for all your efforts.

So what do you think of your laCie S-IPS panel?

Right now I'm seriously considering the NEC-Mitsu 1960NXi (~$510) or the 1970NX (~$530) after reading a lot, i mean a lot of threads/articles/reviews :frown: I think I'm finally settled down on a S-IPS panel, mostly influenced by the guys in prad.de and the LCD article on xbitlabs.

I was considering the Iiyama too.. but err.. it's just fugly sorry 😱😀

Sorry for the slow reply and thanks for your comments. I should check on this thread more often. It just seems to sink and disappear under all those others.. didn't think somebody would dig this up again.

My opinion of the LaCie is very positive. If you have checked prad.de you know I have not made a review yet because I'm waiting to build my new computer and do it then. But I have been using it for a couple of weeks with my current computer (AMD 2100+ 1.7Mhz, 1Gb Ram, GF4400Ti 128MB).

So a brief review of LaCie photon19vision for you..

Ergonomics / build / features:
- tilts nicely, swivels and rotates 90 degrees. I often rotate it for web browsing.. good for long pages like forums. Also now I can view my posters (non-landscape) full screen - see it all at once.
- and yes it is height adjustable
- nice build quality. quite sharp features, sort of industrial-like. Heavy stand (includes metal just for that) stabilizes it nicely. Seems sturdy to me. Screen swivels but reguires a bit force.. enough that stand turns too if you dont hold it with hand. But the reason could be my desk (wood) - may be slippery
- includes software for screen rotation.
- has USB: one to connect to computer, two out for peripherals.
- input choises are D-SUB and DVI-D. I use DVI-D. There's a button for switching sources on the fly.

Panel:
- Colors are beautiful and.. natural? That could be the right word. In my opinion beats my previous CRT (good Samsung 959NF).
- Brightness is good and enough. I only hope it would be even brighter so I could run it at 50% brightness and so, I'm guessing, make it last longer. Normally I use preset brightness & contrast settings, switch them for whatever use I need. 6 presets + 1 user defined. DAY MOVIE-setting uses 100% brightness.
- Speedy enough despite that "25ms". Really, I fail to see ghosting unless I really look for it. And my previous screen was a CRT.
- Viewing angles are wide. I have seen a good PVA panel resently and its angles were better, impossibly good even. S-IPS angles are not quite that wide but good.
- Not a single dead pixel to be found, maybe one color shifting sub pixel. Nothing that I would notice.

Movies / TV:
- Great. I want to watch most of my movies again just for the experience 🙂
- I see no ghosting.

Games (have only tried Doom 3 at 640x480)
- I can get a ghosting effect if I try enough. Spin around in the game and you see slight softening of visuals. But that's just looking for it. In normal gaming there are no problems whatsoever. Sorry I wont be trying UT2004, not my cup of tea. But I imagine it would not be a problem. Of course you can't beat a 12ms or 8ms TN panel with this or any other S-IPS.
- interploration seems good even to 640x480. Interplorated like this the picture might be slightly "blockier" compared to crt.

Cons I can think of:
- My LaCie is of old production series. It has a problem with auto-setting button. In short it doesn't work. I don't mind though, I've got enough choises for settings.
- Doesn't have 5900K color temperature preset. Some might like to have it.
- Backlight bleeding is there, no escaping it. Quite common I believe. It is visible on dark screen. Say you are watching a movie widescreen. On the top black bar you see some backlight leakage. But I can't see this as a big problem. Did not bother me in Doom at least.
- Not as black blacks as with MVA/PVA panel. You can see this on dark screen. It is not as black as one could want. But still when you do something like graphics it is not a problem. That may be because you have other colors for comparison - black looks black. Exellent contrast helps here I guess.

On prad.de they talk of twinkling effect that is a problem for some with S-IPS. I notice no effect like that with this LaCie.

Ok, so it wasn't so brief review after all. I will make a more complete one later (in next two weeks I guess) on prad.de. I hope this helps. And remember all this is highly subjective.

I agree! This is the one of the best LCD thread I've read at Anandtech.
 
Can someone tell me if larger LCDs are in any way slower or not as good as their larger counterparts? Size has nothing to do with it right?

Forgot some issues from review: backlight bleeding and blacks bot being as black as with MVA/PVA. Added those to the review. Also fixed some typos.

I'm sorry for the lapse, I was writing that in a hurry yesterday (Went to see a concert). Also I may have forggotten those because to me those "issues" are not big issues.

I understand it is harder to make a large blazingly fast LCD than a smaller version. Other than that bigger panels are not worse in any way. They are expensive but usually you get what you pay for. But really I shouldn't be saying much. Take a link to X-bit labs article on LCDs. See if there's anything there to help you.
