Fascist Bush administration claims ownership of SPACE

I don't think we have the right to claim that any area of space is ours. What about all the cooperation on things like the international space station? Also, once technology advances enough that private space flights can occur, this will get even messier.

It might be that I'm just really tired, but in that article I didnt see much new info. So, we plan to be able to take out other satellites in space. Well, if we go to war, why wouldnt we take out the oppositions satellites?

The only objection that I would have to it is that the conventional methods of destroying a satellite lead to a lot of debris in earth orbit, which makes space travel more difficult.

It looks way more aggressive than that. From the article:
The nation's largest intelligence agency by budget and in control of all U.S. spy satellites, NRO is talking openly with the U.S. Air Force Space Command about actively denying the use of space for intelligence purposes to any other nation at any time -- not just adversaries, but even longtime allies, according to NRO director Peter Teets.

At the National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs in early April, Teets proposed that U.S. resources from military, civilian and commercial satellites be combined to provide "persistence in total situational awareness, for the benefit of this nation's war fighters." If allies don't like the new paradigm of space dominance, said Air Force secretary James Roche, they'll just have to learn to accept it. The allies, he told the symposium, will have "no veto power."

[emphasis added]
Nothing there about waiting for a war.

As you might guess, Rumsfeld has a hand in this. Also from the article:
Hints of such a policy showed up in the Rumsfeld Commission report of January 2001, which warned of a "space Pearl Harbor" if the United States did not dominate low-earth, geosynchronous and polar orbital planes, as well as all launch facilities and ground stations, to exploit space for battlefield advantage.
Between Rumsfeld and Ashcroft, the arrogance and pugnaciousness of the Bush administration is appalling - and frightening. Let's hope the American people wake up before 2004 or this country may not survive.

bad bad news for our future :disgust:

Just the same, Iceland should demand toll from all satalite owners that fly through the Icelandic "airspace" or they will be shot down with a giant LASER, this plan would include just about 90% of all satalites.

Hmm...for some reason I can't believe that anyone would actually do what that article is suggesting. I mean, hundreds of international companies have satellites in space right now that they activly use for their business. Bush may be agressive, but I can't imagine that we are just going to start shooting down satellites owned by other countries. That could very well be viewed as an act of war, and while war with Iraq is not too big a danger to the US, war with the rest of the planet might not turn out so hot. Bush has not proven himself to be that irrational.

I'm not sure what the big deal is, China has made noise about satellite overflights violating it's "territorial soverighnity" for years.

Of course, when the US intimates something similar, it's the end of the world.

I don't see a problem as long as it creates more jobs in CA ;)
Seriously, the biggest threat to our national security is deficit spending. A bankrupt country can't defend itself too well.

China is talking about overflights over China.

We are talking about taking over ALL of low earth orbit space. The entire globe. When did China try that?

I never said they did try it. And when did we take over all of low earth orbit space? It's all conjecture at this point.

This is irrelevant anyway. Any space faring country can deny access to space for thousands of years with a few hundred kilos of BBs.

Well, you did bring up China, and make a reference to it being similar. There is no similarity. Here would be a similar scenario. China puts up satellites all over including the US. Not the US decides to put some in orbit, and China (who in this case has the technology to make this happen) forbids it. Kind of sticks in your throat doesnt it? It should at least. Of course this hasnt happened, but that is precisely what is being proposed, if this is accurate. The time to bring these issues to light is before they happen. Not that we have any influence as citizens, but it still should take us unawares.
