Actress Farrah Fawcett Hospitalized

April 6, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- Actress Farrah Fawcett is in "good spirits" and is thanking fans for their support as she remains hospitalized in Los Angeles, according to a close friend and physician.

"On Farrah Fawcett's behalf, I can confirm that she recently checked into a Los Angeles hospital," her rep, Craig Nevius, said in a statement. "And although it is usually against her nature to correct false or exaggerated stories that originate in tabloid-style reports by offering true information that they would not otherwise have to publish, Farrah is allowing this statement out of appreciation for her fans, who have offered their constant support throughout her fight, as well as out of concern for the countless of other cancer patients who have written her over the last two-and-a-half years in order to tell her that they are following her story in the hope that there is hope."

Nevius goes on to say, "Farrah has hope, and she hopes that others will continue to hold onto theirs."

Sources close to the family report that the 62-year-old former "Charlie's Angels" star has been hospitalized since Thursday after arriving home from Germany, where she was receiving experimental stem cell treatment for cancer.

Some reports also stated that Fawcett was unconscious.

Fawcett's loved ones, Ryan O'Neal and their son Redmond, were said to be visiting the actress in the hospital. But, Nevius says, they are not holding vigil.

"She is not on death's door. The family has not gathered to say goodbye."

Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's physician who regularly consults with her German doctors, also released a statement on her condition.

"There have been some photographs that have been widely published of Farrah Fawcett in a wheelchair. The reason she was in that wheelchair is because she had a small procedure while in Germany and left for the airport soon after. She could have stayed in Germany to recuperate for a day or two but she was really very anxious to come home. So she took a nine hour flight right after that procedure. It turned out that the procedure caused a small amount of bleeding in one of the muscles of her abdomen, making a hematoma which was quite painful. Actually, it was painful for her to walk which is why she was in that wheelchair. And that pain was coming from the hematoma which had nothing directly to do with the cancer. She's able to walk. And she remains in good spirits with her usual sense of humor. She's been in great shape her whole life and has an incredible resolve and an incredible resilience."

Nevius told People that Fawcett is expected to return home in a few days.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006 and underwent chemotherapy and other treatments. She went into remission four months later, but the disease came back in May 2007.

The Texas native rose to fame in the 1970's when TV producer Aaron Spelling cast Fawcett for "Charlie's Angels," in which she played Jill Munroe, the tanned, glamorous undercover detective with tousled blonde hair. The show was an immediate success, but she quit after the first season.

The actress tried to downplay her sex symbol status through more serious roles in the 1980's. She earned critical acclaim for her performance as a domestic violence survivor in 1984's "The Burning Bed," for which she received the first of three Emmy nominations.
Meantime, Fawcett's son, Redmond O'Neal, was arrested Sunday morning for drug possession.

I would say yes

Symptoms of anal cancer include:

* lumps or bumps located near the anus
* anal bleeding or bleeding during bowel movements
* anal discharge
* pain in or around the anus
* itchy sensation around or inside the anus
* change in bowel habits, such as constipation, diarrhea and the thinning of the stools

iirc, the anus and rectum are both separate organs from the colon.

I've just never heard of "anal" cancer. I've heard of just about every other type under the sun, but not that one. Didn't know if it was some term made up to get attention or not.

I thought this comment was ridiculous and has nothing to do with the story. 🙁

Well it is slightly relevant. Turns out he was in a drug rehab and left it . That has to be hard on her . She is dying and her son only cares about himself.

says it's rare

Anyone know of a link to that SNL skit where Alec Baldwin is an actor between shoots on a soap opera and he's talking about how he has to become familiar with all the technical lingo that a doctor would use, then he does the scene and he mispronouces words like cancer, and anal canal?

Maybe because Farrah was smuggling drugs in her anus? Just a stab in the dark.
