Farmer's Almanac Predicts Bitter Winter for U.S.

Analog

(CNN) --
Break out your winter gear -- the Farmers' Almanac is predicting a rough winter for large parts of the U.S.

The longtime periodical, published since 1818 and famous for its long-range weather predictions, is out with its annual winter forecast, which says Old Man Winter is really going to hammer folks in the Midwest and upper Great Lakes region with very cold and very snowy conditions.

The almanac puts it this way:

"A large area of numbingly cold temperatures will predominate from roughly east of the Continental Divide to west of the Appalachians. The coldest temperatures will be over the northern Great Lakes and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

"But acting almost like the bread of a sandwich, to this swath of unseasonable cold will be two regions with temperatures that will average closer to normal -- the West Coast and the East Coast."

But don't let your guard down if you live along the East or West coasts.

Farmer's Almanac managing editor Sandi Duncan says no one will be immune to the rough weather this winter.

"Even the areas that we say are going to be like the bread of the ice-cold sandwich are going to have bouts of stormy conditions. There's no way it's going to be that mild of a winter," she says.

Nasty weather is also in the forecast for late in the season as winter moves toward spring.

"We're actually predicting a possible blizzard in the northeast to the mid-Atlantic states sometime in February," Duncan says. "And it does look like the cool temperatures to the cold temperatures are going to hang on. And spring does look kind of rainy."

The Farmers' Almanac gets pretty specific about that late-season blizzard forecast.

According to Duncan, "February 12th-15th looks very stormy with blizzard conditions possible especially in New England but also going down to the mid-Atlantic coast."

The periodical says, "While three-quarters of the country is predicted to see near- or below-average precipitation this winter, that doesn't mean there won't be any winter storms! On the contrary, significant snowfalls are forecast for parts of every zone."

Hmm, this isn't looking good since the northern great lakes area is where I am at.

Granted the last 3 or 4 have been mild so I guess it's due.

How accurate is the almanac overall?

Pretty damn accurate and usually better than the TV weather people from my experience. I buy a new copy every year basically for the weather.

Apparently they use a
top secret mathematical and astronomical formula, that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary position and many other factors
to predict the weather up to TWO YEARS in advance. Two. Years.

They're doing horoscopes. Many of the predictions are likely based on proven climate trends (not that anyone knows for sure, since they won't divulge their secret method), but they also throw out a lot of vague predictions, then take credit for the hits and hope we forget the misses.

By the way, if you think one cold winter should convince people that global warming doesn't exist, by your own logic, if the winter is warmer than normal, will you change your own mind? Don't get me wrong, either way, you're still an imbecile, but at least if it's the latter you'll avoid being a hypocrite too.

The Alnamc usually predicts the snowfall to within 50 inches. 50 inches is about %10 of our total snowfall. Id say that's pretty good!

Good, bring it on I say! My snowblower has barely gotten a workout these past few years, I need some serious snow to really give it a challenge!

I have a strong feeling that Denver is going to get pounded by snow this year, if this summer's extraordinary amount of rain and relatively cool temperatures is any indication. Reminds me of 2006's summer. I think we had four blizzards that 06/07 winter season. Including the Xmas blizzard which royally fucked air transportation for everyone.

Like I said, anyone that is a member of the "Church of Global Warming" cannot be reasoned with, because just like bible thumpers, they're right, your wrong, and there's no way to argue with them. Resorting to insults is indicative of this type of naivety.

Are you, perchance, a talk radio host?

Now, who exactly are these people that you're talking about? Can I get some parameters, or are they just people that disagree with you?
