"The study by Mr. Mishra found that 86.5 percent of farmers who took their own lives were indebted ? their average debt was about $835 ? and 40 percent had suffered a crop failure. "

Even with all the growth they're having, the wealth is staying among the wealthy and middle class folks, it's not spreading out into the villages at all, this is going to be one of the biggest issues in the long run.

Geez... if I could
I'd be willing to have these Indians clean my house every week (By paying off their debts)

Poverty is a huge problem in India, and since most farmers are so poor, they can get loans without putting up their farm for collateral. When their farms go south, their debts pile up and they commit suicide to erase their debts and their family can start anew.

Much of the city poverty could be reduced by paying people to keep the streets clean, especially in the large cities. There's so much trash everywhere and if the people living in the slums have money they can impove thier standards of living.

Across the country in desperate pockets like this one, 17,107 farmers committed suicide in 2003, the most recent year for which government figures are available. Anecdotal reports suggest that the high rates are continuing.

What the hell... if growing crops is that bad, maybe they need to improve the process or grow something else?

Sally Struthers should start a "rent an Inidan farmer" program. You could get letters from them containing pictures of their bumper crops thanks to your money.

got a problem with capitalism?
When people are killing themselves over $800 debt.

India has a socialist system...

And people say Corporations are evil. Huge Corporate farm companies should be allowed to purchase the farmland so idiot farmers don't have to commit suicide

The United Kingdom I live in is supposedly a socialist system too, but it's still a capitalist nation. In this country those farmers would've been given a small amount of money per week to make sure they can get by until they find a better source of income.

I don't think India has a complete socialist system, like a country does not have a complete capitalist system. No, corporations are not necessarily evil, but the drive to profits can narrow their field of view. You are not in the shoes of these farmers and don't know what life they live. India has strong family values and traditions, and pride is something that is not taken lightly there, for better or worse, who knows.

i'm sorry, if you're a farmer today in a modern or emerging market, you're either short-sighted or an idiot.

What the hell are you talking about? Most of India is still considered a third world country. The parts of the country that are growing economically rapidly, have only been doing so since early 90's. 60% of its labor force is in agriculture. You're being short-sighted just by making that comment.

Are you saying that farmers don't make any money? I guess all the farmers I ever met must've stolen those countryside stables and Land Rovers from more fortunate city folks.

Government subsidies my arse, they just work a lot harder than most people I know and they make a fortune selling their produce.

I don't know what you have against farmers, but I bet I know more than a few who are more well-off than you are.

price floors, tariffs on foreign crops, farm subsidies; yes all these help farmers make more money than they deserve, and in turn they vote for the douchebags that support the laws.

Unregulated capitalism? You betcha! The middle class is being squeezed real hard here in the USA. I own two homes and I hope this house of cards falls on it's face when oil is traded on the Euro, NOT the U$D. This country belongs to CorpUSA & the neocons!

Too bad about India but our economy is based on slave labor, here and abroad.
