FarCry looking awful

Forgive me if this is a newb question, but I haven't found a good answer anywhere. I just bought a 6800GT. UT2004 runs and looks great. Ditto on 3DMark2003.

However, when I first loaded FarCry (even after setting up in "Configure FarCry") the title screen looked hideous. Pixelated and disgusting. I tried a few different ways to fix things (they were set as high as they can go) then finally reserved myself to starting up the game.

When the game loaded, however, it seemed to look great. Beautiful resolution, nice pixel shader effects on the water, etc.

Is there something I'm missing here? Is the title screen supposed to look bad?

No, I got the game with the card. I don't do pirated stuff.

I think I have the answer: the opening movie is apparently just that, a movie. At least according to the official FarCry boards.

And by the way, the ingame graphics are incredible on the 6800GT. Really top-notch.

You got it right - the opening animation is just a looping pre-rendered movie. Don't worry about how it looks.

The movie that plays is "Far Cry\Languages\Movies\DemoLoops\CryTek.bik".

It is one of those Bink videos and the res is approximately 800x600.

You can download their player, RADTools.exe, to watch all of the cutscenes.

well it is quite a few notchs down until they finally get the 1.2 patch out so nvidia cards don't make the pixel shader effects look all blocky.

You maybe thinking of the FX's that render the game horribly?

fc w 1.1 patch has many rendering issues w/ nv40.

1.2 patch (still not publically avail) is said to take care of those issues, as well as increase performance in certain areas with multiple light sources.

You really haven't seen this game on an XT have you? It's more like 2nd or 3rd notch.

Yeah, he's using v1.1 General. Just like all FarCry gamers. 1.2 not only fixes the shading effects on a 6800, it allows even more items to be seen. Check out Toms article on it. Its a pretty good one. Nice screenie comparison of before and after 1.2 right beside X800 shots.

Geeze, why would he do that. The nV card can't be as good as the X800

To be honest, I think they're about neck and neck. I swear no allegiance to either company, and will readily get whatever card's available/I think is good. I've been very surprised by the quality of the 6800GT, considering all the negative press nVidia was getting last generation. Very good card.

Yup, major blockies in 1.1 for both NV3x and NV40. 1.2 seems to have fixed everything on the NV40 and a major amount of issues on NV3x. Increased performance on the NV40 but did nada for the PS2.0 NV3x.
So basically, you will be able to play far cry with all of its splendor, and little extras judging from the extra lighting that showed up on that cabinet in the PS3.0 screenie for the 6800, with the 1.2 patch.
And, patch 1.3 from Crytek is supposed to enable HDR. We shall see what goes down.
