and

Halo?.......you must have gotten lost on your way to an Xbox forum.

Really...Halo was a text book example of copy/paste level design. It was like some sort of bad horror movie, every time you turn a corner you are staring down the same hallway you just left.

haha...I just got the new PC Gamer and they had some lame GamesRadar top 10 cartoon in there (now that they are pimping GamesRadar so much)

one of the top ten most loathed PC Gamers was the "Forumite" who never plays games but enjoys complaining about how much they all suck.

Half-Life 2 could have been a great game if it didn't get so repetitive later on. Towards the end you just went from street to street, fighting wave after wave of combine and occasionally shooting glowing orbs from generators or whatever. Far Cry didn't have a great variety of enemies or weapons either, but each level could be completed differently enough that it more than made up for it.

Halo's enemy ai was fun to play against, which accounts for much of my enjoyment in that game. The Flood also provided that 'kill everything you see' type of fun which I felt was welcome after many levels against the more challenging Covenant Elites...etc.

HL2 was all-time epic, for me. Great game, all the way through. It's amazing though, that now I can breeze through the entire game on Hard difficulty without breaking a sweat... One issue though is the weapons are all so inaccurate... none of them really pack much of a punch.

Far Cry was solid, and the graphics were phenomenal at that time. I still remember upgrading to a 7800GTX 256MB a year or so later and being floored with how good the graphics were. Trigens weren't any fun, imo. The game went majorly downhill after that. Crysis was much better, although I still have no desire to replay the alien levels...

In my opinion (and on a technical point of view it ain't entirely wrong) Half-Life 2 shouldn't be considered a completed game, not in the sense that it sucks, but in the sense that Episode One, Episode Two and Episode Three are completing the "game" that is Half-Life 2. The "original" Half-Life 2 is considered by many as one and single game, but that would be saying that The Fellowship of the Ring was just one movie and that The Two Towers and The Return of the King had nothing to do with the first one.

The Half-Life games are just... that, a series, and despite the fact that I loved FarCry, I have to say that Half-Life 2, including Episode One and Episode Two, simply destroys FarCry, even if I myself often complain about the absurdly predictable linearity of the whole series. The dialog and the facial expressions along with the music and the general atmosphere makes Half-Life 2 an interactive movie, really, that's what it is, just without the CGI sequences of games like the Final Fantasy series. In FarCry it's about action, but other than that there's really nothing to it. The Half-Life series is much more profound and complex.

I thought that was actually the better part of HL2. Until that point, you had basically been running through nothing but dilapidated houses and dark sewers, with each area looking exactly like the previous one. I had long since lost interest in the story by then, but the parts with the striders and the final level were actually pretty fun.

I never could get into Far Cry, tried like three times but each time I would only play about half an hour and get bored. HL2 was better imo and was like a movie, but not very replayable.

I preferred far cry. I played hl2 twice (last time was when ep 3 game out and i replayed the entire sequence). farcry on the other hand i like to play when i'm killing time. Each level can be done a gazillion different ways with different paths. Some are sort of sneak and streak and others are run and shoot. I esp liked "The Boat" section (the one that ends with the heli crashing).

The later part of the games (last 2 or 3) were kind of annoying - and i never liked how the trigants would totally miss you but you would still insta die.

I could not stand Far Cry, played for about a hour and just could not get into it. Hl2 i've played maybe 10 times since its been released. Loved it.

lol, my experience was the exact opposite. In reality, I think both games are very good and it just depends upon some personal preferences, recent gaming experiences, and perhaps your general attitude towards gaming at the time you play them. This is why I think I enjoyed Doom 3 but not so much Quake 4, when for most people I think it's the opposite.

By what measure do you think HL2 sucked? I like Farcry more, but to say that HL2 sucked is just silly. Unless you got it and didn't know it was a FPS, I don't see how anyone can say it sucked.

Ask pontifex. He thinks both of them suck.

First of all I almost spit out my afternoon beer when I read this....

I agree pretty much w/ op. Nice how both games can kind of hold their own if you load them up 4 yrs later. DE had the story and the gameplay, Farcry had the graphics and the open environment, HL2 has the story telling and the movie-like atmosphere....I always feel like that while the HL's are linear, they kind of whisk you away so you are in the story from scene to scene. Might seem contradictory w/ linearity but I find that immersive. To say that either one sucks is kind of ridiculous IMO. They were both somewhat revolutionary.

Farcry with the superior graphics, but most important to me is gameplay / fun factor & Half-Life 2 wins in that department.

FarCry had better normal weapons as well as a better weapon system (I like being limited with the number/type of guns/weapons/tools/etc I can carry at once), but HL2 trumps it with the grav gun. However I also feel that the grav gun was almost too emphasized seeing as how ineffective the weapons were and how little ammo they let you stock up on (the magnum, one of the the few effective weapons, could only stash up 18 shots...wtf) I felt it was encouraged to use the grav gun as a weapon too much. And for a sci-fi genre, the grav gun being the only uniquely sci-fi weapon/tool in HL2, I also feel it was a bit of a let-down not to have some more unique weapons. The crossbow would be one, but it really isn't that unique other than the looks of it. The AR2 Pulse rifle could have been interesting, but it also lacked interest as it discouraged use because of severe restrictions to the ammo just like with the magnum, and it was also less effective than it should have been.

Far Cry...hey let's crawl around in the jungle for 15 hours! That was my experience. HL2 had a better story and better physics system that made it fun to play.

there is no way hl2 is better than farcry.
imo.

I think it's apples and oranges. FPS games they may both be, but you have to admit it's an altogether different type of experience between the two.

HL2 is inexplicably rooted to the story, whereas Farcry puts story second, compensating for it with unbelievably awesome gameplay and options, as well as a longer game in general. I think one could argue that they're almost games of two different sub-sub-genres of FPS games.

I was shocked by this post. What on earth would make Farcry better then Half Life? Farcry is an arcade game with good graphics, maybe the best graphics of its time, but on the gameplay side it doesn't even come close to the HL 2 or 1 really. I liked the Crytek title but only at the beginning, after I started to encounter the bosses that had to be shot 10 times to die just because they were bosses, the game became annoying. I couldn't even finish it, being close to the final but having to shot my way through the aliens that needed a couple of rockets to die, even though they were made out of flesh, just annoyed and bored the hell out of me. That game didn't had puzzles or anything, it was almost like a Serious Sam but in the jungle. I didn't even catch the storyline. I mean I crashed my airplane into the sea and then I'm shooting people and aliens without understanding why.

On the other hand, the source powered title was purely amazing. The attention for details, the puzzles, the story were just overwhelming. Every level is carved so beautiful, the puzzles are difficult sometimes, but never annoying or anything. Add the graphics and the story over these and it's just a perfect title. At least that is what I think.
