Ripped from SD.

Newegg has Encore USB WIFI Adapters they've dropped to $10. Well they have a $10 rebate too. It's supposed to be a shell shocker I guess but the price is live. If you go through FW cashback, they actually pay you to take these as shipping is free with shoprunner. Limit is 2 rebates per person. I picked up two. More junk to sit in my closet.

b/g. BIG difference. G is enough for many uses, b would be almost worthless.

Indeed. And with them being free and all, there's quite a risk involved

Maybe I have this wrong, but doesn't wifi drop to the lowest performance level of any connected device? Add a cheap g and everything slows to g rates.

Depends on your router. Most don't have Internet at 54 mbs so its mostly irrelevant unless your home networking.

Just to be clear, the highest bandwidth that an 802.11g adapter can actually provide is about 10mbps, nowhere near the 54mbps rating. That's below the bandwidth of almost every cable internet provider out there.

I wouldn't buy a "g" adapter. But if you're looking for something ridiculously cheap, this could fit the bill. Many of the places that offer public wifi are giving you "g" service. Most people don't need more than about 10mbps on a handheld device. Of course there are exceptions.

If this had been "b" only, it would be a waste of money and time.

IME about 20-22 mbs. Plenty fast to stream netflix, torrent, etc. N is twice that fast about 50. "Average" Internet speed last year 7.4 mbs. So double average and then some. Most will be happy with it. I get 87 down on fios, but my PS3's are G so we run mixed compatibility mode. Most of my "N" devices currently at 40 down.

The problem isn't single user, should be fine for one person, but if you have two or three wifi users, aka kids or spouse, and you add your g you drop their speed as well.
