Not everyone is exposed to various cultures/had a decent education that taught critical thinking or has some form of authoritarian childhood baggage.
As a young punk rocker I had a number of hammerhead skin sorts for roommates, really they were ignorant about politics, but usually were bright enough to have read a bit. People grow out of the right-wing extremism thing -or they used to at least, before talk radio. (which sounds EXACTLY like the propaganda my old roommates would go on and on about all night.)
It's creepy really. But I have gotten kinda used to hearing it on mainstream sources, kinda. Its creeped though since the 80s into the American mindset through right wing media.
Republicans and right wingers were a lot more even headed back then. Now its all about corporate sensationalist divide and conquer the working man tabloid bullshit with a splash of fascistic and christian dominionist overtones for shits and giggles to keep the ideological whip cracking.
