Can someone explain the differences between the 2 media types, as related to this game? I'm thinking about looking to pick up a used copy and want to know which to look for.

The DVD hasn't got anything extra. I'm still wondering why they aren't just shipping all large games on DVD only.
 
Thanks gang. Looks like it really doesn't matter. I guess I'll try for the DVD to keep the number if disc's down (I have billions it seems already) but I guess it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Apparently not enough people have DVD-ROMs yet. Hard to imagine, but if you look at a site like Dell and look at the default optical storage on new systems, its either CD-ROM or a CD burner. Combo drives should be the minumum, but it isnt.
 
While a DVD would be okay I like using the CD-ROM because I have an image of it on my hard drive and just you daemon tools to load the game. I do this with DIII also. I hate putting CD's in the drive ahha.

They really aren't.

Not everyone out there upgrades as much as us geeks do, & there are far too many people without DVD drives still, nevermind DVD RWs.

I agree they need to start putting more games on DVD, & making the DVD versions as readily available as the CDs version, since doing the 3 or more disc swap is dumb.

I don't get it. You could mount DVD images as well with daemon tools/alcohol 120%. Also why would you waste hard drive space to mount a cd image if you have the real cd?? If you hate having cd's in your drive while playing a game then just use a no-cd crack after installation. There is nothing wrong with using no-cd cracks with your legit games though they do cause issues with games that go online.
 
DVD version in european only. FC on DVD was never released here in the states, so keep that in mind. Especially when patching.
 
Actually, the DVD version of FC WAS released in the US; just not to the general public. They were giving them away with AMD promotions, as I have one. And you can quite easily image it to your HDD with Alcohol 120% and not have to insert the DVD. Normally, I have several games on my comp and obviously only two optical drives. I personally don't want to have to swap discs. 2x80GB of storage is enough that I don't have to worry about 5-10GB of images.
 
Always get DVD versions of games if they're available. At the very least you'll have far less discs to deal with.

hmm would I want a 4GB image or a 650 MB image... Thats why I don't use a DVD version... I perfer just having the image rather than a no cd crack either way as I like to play games online more than single player for the most part. not DIII or FC though as both of their MP sucks hehe. As for storing images. I just find it easier to have them on my HDD. I don't have tons of things taking up my space so I don't care about a few disc images so I don't have to worry about scratching up my CD's, they just stay in their cases over on the shelf. To each his own though. I am not against DVD games by any means I don't understnad why more games arn't offered on a DVD... But since not many are I don't really have a problem using CD's for now either.

But then, those lowends wouldn't be able to play games such as FarCry and Doom III anyway 😉

I haven't seen anything resembling a highend gaming box without a DVD player in quite some time.
Even the HP workstations we buy come with DVD players by default, and have been for ~2 years.
 
Less people have a dvd than a cdrom (thats an absolute since dvd drive also plays cdrom), plus it costs more to make dvd's, apparently more than to make those 4 cds for games. Surprised me but i read it from a dev - think it was id in a gamespy interview.

I guess it's possible the extra cost of dvd vs cd is less in europe than us, which is why some games come out in europe on dvd but only on cd is america (either that or euro market damands dvd's more).

Must be something other than the actual disc that costs more in that case.
A friend of mine worked for a company that made CD/DVD liners, and he gave me some cost and time figures for how fast their liners could press the discs, and what they cost, the DVD's were somewhat slower and somewhat more expensive than CD's, but 2 CD's were still more expensive and took a longer time to press than 1 DVD.

And like I said, FarCry and Doom aren't exactly games you'll be playing on low-mid end computers, and the systems that are capable of playing them will most likely have DVD readers.
 
I spend a little over $400 for my 6800GT a while back, I have pretty high end rig (1gb PC3200, 2.2ghz barton), and I just blew $43 on a MX510...

...and I still don't have a DVD drive, 😱. I figured its not worth the upgrade for me right now... we already have 4 DVD players in the house. Xbox, PS2, Brothers PC, and Standalone DVD player.
 
Isn't Myst IV: Revelation being released on DVD only? I read that it would take 8 CDs for that game, so they decided on DVD. I think we are getting to the point where DVDs will become necessary, though not everyone has one yet.
 
I do not have a dvd drive as of yet either. I have no need to burn a dvd. I gues I will need to get one soon since some games, as mentioned above, are going that route.
 
You can tell they're really pushing for DVD rom drives, now with so many combo drives out on the market its almost silly not to get a combo drive if you're looking to get a CD burner.
