Far Cry demo lock-up with BFG 6800GT

I know this is old news, but since I've gotten the new 6800 GT vid card I wanted to stretch its legs a bit with some more demanding games...

I figured I'd give the Far Cry demos a shot- downloaded both, and got the exact same result with both:

Tried all different video settings- went as low as 'Medium' for everything, and still locked up immediately after the demo started running- I hear the sounds of the game, but it just freezes and all I see is a shot of the island and my pistol as I stand in the boat. I literally have to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of the program every time...

Is this what I should expect if I ever bought the game? I'm hoping it's just a conflict with the older demo and my drivers or something, but I wanted to ask around first....

If you don't have the newest nVidia drivers, you might try that step.

I found the full retail game runs much better than the demo. Any problem I had with demo went away when installed the full game. It ran much better and faster.

I do have the latest drivers, but a lot of responses I'm getting on various boards suggest the same as you, with relation to the retail version vs. the demo...

Thanks!

ya, retail fixed a lot of problems that the demo had. I know I had a few bugs with my 9800 Pro. Best suggestion other than the retail version would be to test a bunch of revisions of the drivers. Maybe an older versin had a fix in it for the demo.

Heh, the same thing happened to me with my Radeon 9100. My 9700P lets me play the demo, tho it rather regularly hard locks the PC (everything stops, including sound, and I have to hard reboot). Actually, it locked the first time, then I was able to play through the demo all the way thru. I then added the bonus Research map, and now it locks a minute or two into it. :) It may just be the drivers, either video or sound (IIRC, the readme recommended specific video drivers).

Given that you have the asme problem with a nV card, it's probably the game that's buggy. But I also experience occasional hard locks with the Halo demo, so my experience may point more toward some other system-wide problem, like the drivers or my PSU.
