FAR CRY AND THE NVIDIA 7800

Oh, you changed your OP before I could quote it! Good for you :| Basically, it was "I bet that the Crossfire X850XT could beat the crappy SLI 7800GTX in this benchmark. Any takers?"

Go away. Now. There is enough flaming around here without an idiot like you stirring the pot.

Intelia, I thought you were only a supporter of US companies (reason she prefers Intel over AMD, Domestic over Import cars etc...)? If my memory serves me correctly, isn't Nvidia a US company (California based) and ATI a Canadian based company?

Regardless, I don't think 2 X850's could keep up with 2 7800's in any game.

Ramble! ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble!

Not trying to add fuel but from the benchies I've seen the X850XT PE is very close if not dead even with the 7800GTX at 1600x1200 4AA/8AF in FarCry. So if Crossfire proves to be as effective as SLI than I don't see why Crossfired X850XTs couldn't keep up with SLI'd 7800GTXs in FarCry.

Pump up the res a bit and see what happens.

Some games favor different cards, and even different levels in the same game run better on certain cards than others. In HL2 and CS:S, for example, dual x850's might keep up with dual 7800's, but in general, the 7800 outclasses any other card available today.

One big difference is what happens when you play at resolutions > 16x12. The x850's and the gf6 cards were not designed for such high resolutions, so they take a big hit there. The 7800 scales pretty well to high resolutins, so it's a better card for high res gaming.

True, at resolutions >1600x1200 the 7800GTX really takes off but 99% of gamers don't play at those resolutions. I guess the OP should specify which res and settings she's talking about.

Yup. Both the X850XTPE and a 7800GTX can easily handle FarCry. 1600x1200 must be the sweet spot for CPU/GPU bottleneck. You know, where the CPU is not longer the bottleneck at lower resolution and then the GPU limit comes into play afterward. That is the reason the 7800GTX takes off after 1600x1200.

Please reread your own post here and then realize that you are not making sense here.

First you say that you bet 2 X850XT will beat 2 7800 what? GTX's? Then you say a single 6800 ( no mention of which one) beats a X850xt.

Here is what I'm talking about: If you noticed that a single 6800Ultra beats a X850XT in a FarCry bench, What in the land of all thats holy would make you bet that 2 x850xt's can beat out 2 7800anything's? YOU DONT MAKE SENSE or at least don't take the time to try to make any. Your always contradicting yourself from one sentence to the next.

Please try to take an extra few seconds and reread your posts before you submit them.
It would be much appreciated. Oh, and you need to stay on top of your details. Specify the EXACT items your talking about, E.G. 6800Ultra or GT or X850XTPE.
It makes a difference and is easier to understand your posts.

Thanks in advance.

I concur 🙂

Basically, it will take another doom3 or other crazy shader intense game to really bring the other "last gen" cards to their knees at more reasonable resolutions (1280*1024 or similar) where as the we can hope the 7800 series will quietly chug along and scale well.

I couldn't believe the change in doom3 from my 9800Pro to my 6800NU. It was simlpy awesome 😀 It'll just take a game like that for us to see a good reason to upgrade, IMHO.

Why are you doing this? You know that nothing can compare with 2 7800's, especially at high resolutions, and if that's not enough, do x850xt's support transparency supersampling, windows UDA, and SM 3.0? I think not.

Wasn't meant as a flame at all ! I just said thats the first review I seen where a 6800 beat the 850 in that game . I was thinking that 2 850 could= + / 2 7800's in that game Also I forgot to say that I use A 19" LCD display Native @ 1280x1024 so thats the res. I was referring to since 1280x1024 is even high for gamers Most use 1024 X 768. I was thinking along the lines of real world for LCD'S. sorry1

7800gtx>x850 (whatever).
7800gtx x2 > x850 x2
7800gtx sli (SM3 enabled)>x850 crossfire (sm2)

No, the x850s would most likely not win.

Intelia, wasn't it bad enough that you infected the CPU/OC forum with your rampant idiocy? Could you not leave the other forums free of your diseased rationale, such as how a card that already is close or ties Crossfire (a single 7800GTX) will suddenly lose to it in SLI?

.

Well I really really like the Canadians . Fact is thats were we are retiring to when its time .

I think munky put it correctly when he stated that certain games prefer certain cards. Nevertheless, I gotta say that 7800s would poop on the X850XT, single or double card. We've already seen the benches. R520 is a toss up...but then, it's not even out yet, and we weren't even talkin bout that, were we?
