Far Cry 3 engine problem?

I upgraded my 6850 to 7950 and while overall the experience has been good, this game is still frustrating me. It still hitches periodically, as if it has trouble loading new areas, it did the same thing on my 6850, it happens even on minimal settings.

Also, vsync 1 introduces a pronounced stutter, while vsync 2 locks to 30 fps but engine still hitches periodically.

Is it from hard drive streaming maybe? But then why isnt the game making use of my 8gb ram? Is it simply due to being a console port from 512mb consoles?

Not sure if it was a joke or not. Far Cry 3 isn't a port, so that question makes no sense. Far Cry 3 has to be one of the best optimized games for the PC. I have a 7750 running on high-ultra settings fine. Vsync off with a 60hz monitor

I'm not sure what your problem is, do you have screen tears, lag, slow loading?

What are your specs?

Screen tearing, periodic hitching, vsync adds stuttering (seperate from framerate). The game runs smooth but stutters/hitches periodically. Its subtle, some wouldnt notice.

Odd. I have a slow crappy boot drive (where FC3 is installed) and I don't have any sort of hitching or stuttering. I'm running it medium-high-ish on my system. 1680x1050

Core2 e8400 3ghz
6gb DDR2
GTX460GC 768mb

It's not uncommon. Just google 'Far Cry 3 stuttering' there are lot of people with high end rigs having problems.

Thanks cmdredd, I might give that a shot.

You can go over to the Video Card forum and get better help there, driver recommendations and settings etc. Far Cry 3 is a horrible engine and I have to change some settings to make it work smoothly with my 680.

You mean the Dunia Engine. And I don't see how its horrible because you have to change settings.

It's horrible because the FPS is good but turning some setting down suddenly moved it from a stutterfest to smooth.

Derp you mean Dunia 2 engine. But more importantly,

Red, what are you contributing here? Are you here to argue semantics or help solve a problem.

He did not say its a horrible engine BECAUSE he has to change settings. He says he has to change settings BECAUSE its a horrible engine, man. There's a large difference there.

Seriously, if you just here to argue semantics, please stay out. I hate seeing new replies to my thread and its just some guy not even trying to help, just going around (inaccurately) pointing out what he perceives as flaws in other peoples responses. That is so annoying man.

If you won't learn to read you need to get off the internet. I was clarifying what he said and you're saying the opposite of what I was talking about.

The engine is bad because it stutters even at high fps. Then you turn something down and magically it goes away. It's not optimized.

And I did offer help, sometimes using fps limiters removes perceived stutter. You probably didn't even try it and if you did, you didn't say so.

Redinit said to Nintendesert

"And I don't see how its horrible because you have to change settings."

My response to Redinit is

"He did not say its a horrible engine BECAUSE he has to change settings. He says he has to change settings BECAUSE its a horrible engine, man. There's a large difference there."

Redinit mischaracterized what Nintendesert was saying, and then responded based on that mischaracterization. That's where my issue comes from. No issue with you Cmdredd.

It's the game not your hardware or even drivers.

I have the stuttering with 80+ frames per second with everything maxxed, and with god knows how many frames at the lowest possible settings for everything.

As soon as you move the mouse, it stutters, regardless of settings... but if you simply strafe and don't move the crosshair at all, there is zero stuttering. Also, when you get to the top of a radio tower, and it does that sweeping around to quickly show points of interest - zero stuttering.

I've tried everything, including new and different video drivers, reinstalling, editing the config files, changing each and every video/etc option seperately, and even trying a Logitech mouse with it's software (instead of using my Razer).

It's smooth as silk on my gtx 660 with the latest drivers and everything but MSAA on max settings. If I turn MSAA on even at the lowest setting it's like pouring tar over my frame rate.

You can run normal anti-aliasing. As for multi-sample, if it brings a 2GB 660 to its knees on even the low settings, I wouldn't necessarily expect it to fly with a 680. I can't compare to Radeon cards, but the technique is obviously very costly, either in general, or perhaps specifically in this implementation. I've heard people say that you can't run msaa smoothly without the equiv. of a 690 (two 680's in SLI).

Edit: a little Googling around will show that even with twin 680's people are turning it off because of the huge performance hit.
