'Far Cry 3 on PC will surpass console versions, Ubi says
NewsPosted 18/07/2011 - 2:11pm GMT+1
Differences 'might not be as much as people' expect.

The PC version of Far Cry 3 will be better looking than the console counterparts, but the differences might not be as striking as gamers expect, lead game designer Jamie Keen has told VideoGamer.com.

"The PC does have a lot more grunt under the hood - or it can have grunt - so there's a lot more that we can push there," said Keen. "That doesn't mean to say, 'Let's only push PC and leave the consoles behind.' We will keep pushing to get as much out of the consoles as we possibly can.

"When we do finally unveil what the console versions looks like, I think people are are going to be surprised. Yeah, there are going to be differences, but it might not be as much as people realise."

Far Cry 3 follows the recent trend for leading with gameplay from the PC build, before showing off the less visually impressive console versions at a later date. Besides a brief glimpse of EA's Battlefield 3 on PlayStation 3, the game has been shown only running on PC.

"That's why we're making no bones about this being on PC, and everything that goes along with that," said Keen. "There are going to be areas where the consoles aren't going to be able to push things as much as the PC can.

"So, there is going to be a difference, but as much as we can minimise that gap, we're certainly working as hard as we possibly can to do that."

Keen concluded: "We're very lucky, in that we're going on the same base that Far Cry 2 had, and now our tech base is very, very strong."

Far Cry 2 was pretty good. I still think Crytek's Far Cry 1 was the better game, but FC3 does look pretty damn good and interesting.

Far Cry 2 was a beautiful open-world game with great gunplay. It's a damn shame the missions and enemies were so repetitive. Here's to hoping Far Cry 3 will be better in this regard.

Far Cry 2 had a beautiful world and some good gunplay. Too bad other than that the game design was horribly broken. If they'd let modders at it, it could have been fixed and might still be a viable alternative.

Tremendous amounts of dumb in the game design. Too bad, the Dunia engine was quite good.

You have to hope they learned something from FC2. And implemented it in FC3...

What killed Far Cry 2 for me were the horrible Multiplayer design decisions. And the bugs.
Mostly the one decision that you cannot join a multiplayer match in progress.
So you sat in a lobby waiting for the server to fill up before they would start the round, then a bunch of people from one side would leave, leaving the match horribly unbalanced, and the game would not allow others to join and refill empty the slots.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. It made me angry because the gameplay itself was very good, but the framework around it ruined it.
I hate Ubisoft for what they did with that game.

Far Cry 2 was so horrendously awful to the core that it ruins any give a shit I may have had for the series. #3 would have to be universally praised by critic and gamer alike to be considered... And then only during a steam sale.

I liked Farcry 2, but only to ride around in the jeep and kill people randomly. I liked the open world. I never beat it though.

That being said I hope this one is good, it looks good and I like the crazy bad guy. So we'll see how it plays.

From IGN:

With Far Cry 3, players step into the shoes of Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island. In this savage paradise where lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing, players dictate how the story unfolds, from the battles they choose to fight to the allies or enemies they make along the way. As Jason Brody, players will slash, sneak, detonate and shoot their way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of right and wrong.
Sounds like Fall Out 3.

aka it is a console port with the standard flair pc upgrades of higher res textures and such

I'm interested in the game, but regard it with a lot of caution still after FC2.

I loved FarCry2. Yes, there was definitely some repetitiveness to it, but there are SO FEW developers making this kind of FPS. Truly open world and mission based - with day/night cycles, some survival elements, etc. At least they made some attempt at bumping up the level of realism a notch with that platform....the execution certainly wasn't perfect, but I dug a lot of the ideas presented in that game.

Who else is making an FPS like this?

Let's see...STALKER, and........hmmmm.....that's about it. There's definitely more room for this type of game.

My stokage level is very high for 3.

Add me to the legions who hated FC2. I only play shooters. And I am a whore for good graphics. So it tells you something when I only made it about 4% into a game that I was looking forward to, and uninstalled never to see it again. This game looks like it has potential. Very run of the mill however.

I like the little things in FC2, how you can view your hands grabbing door handles..etc. it adds to the realism instead of watching doors open magically by themselves like every single other game out there.
It had many elements that Crysis did, like shooting off branches but you couldnt really use it to crush an enemy below it like you could in Crysis.

I also loved how the enemies would pick up their wounded buddies and carry them to safety...didnt always work out well, but it was an awesome novelty that could lead to much further potential in A.I. advancement which sadly has gone nowhere far in a decade.
FC2,Oblivion,Fear and maybe a couple others are the only half ass decent use of A.I. tech in forever and its kinda sad actually.

what really sucks is that despite the awesome engine and decent editor. no one, i mean no one made any damn mods for the game or tried to improve its gameplay. If someone would just fix how enemies repopulate areas it wouldnt be so bad. But to just play the game as a man hunter so to speak, just go around like rambo taking out guys its really a pretty fun and beutiful game. But the respawn of enemies has got to go.

I decided to go back and play FC2 some more (bought it on Steam sale a few months ago, never really finished it). God it's a beautiful game, especially for a console port... a GOOD console port (quicksaving FTW). Try going to bed and then wake up at 5:00 AM in time for dawn. Seeing the sunrise come through the trees in the morning is absolutely gorgeous. That, coupled with good gameplay, is awesome.

But the missions... the MISSIONS... they're all the same... unggnghghgnghgn.

Edit: Seriously, I love how there are save points in all of the weapons houses and safe houses around the map, left over from the console versions, but they're basically rendered useless since you can mash F5 at any time to save your game. Real nice.

On another note, it really helps to turn off the music in this game. The soundtrack is kind of cheesy anyway, and it changes when you are in a firefight. If you just leave it off it really adds to the immersion.

The best part of FC2 , to me, was its map editor. I recreated my ex house and set that bitch on fire.

I hated FC 2, or as i like to call it African respawn central.

I got so bored of clearing the same checkpoint EVERY time i drive by it, even 30 seconds after i just cleared it.

I mean really, clear checkpoint, get in jeep, drive 100 feet away and realize you forgot to pickup(insert item here) and go back for it, oh look fully populated again, clear again and grab item, go do mission, drive back through checkpoint 5 min later, oh look full AGAIN.

I loved the physics especially with fire, and the gameplay was ok but i couldnt get over the super RETARDED spawn rates.

FC3 is going to need a metacritic score of 95+ to get my cash.

this. I can't think of a more drastic example of part II of a game being so much worse than the original.

sounds more like he was saying their trying to make it look as close to the PC as they can.
